Removal Procedure

  1. Remove 2/3 of the brake fluid from the master cylinder.
  2. Raise the vehicle and suitably support. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  3. Remove the Wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.

  4. Object Number: 105305 Size: SH
  5. Install a large C-clamp over the body of the brake caliper with the C-clamp ends against the rear of the caliper body and against the outer brake pad.
  6. Tighten the C-clamp until the caliper piston is compressed into the caliper bore enough to allow the caliper to slide past the brake rotor.
  7. Remove the C-clamp from the caliper.

  8. Object Number: 105290 Size: SH
  9. Remove the bottom caliper slide pin.

  10. Object Number: 105278 Size: SH
  11. Pivot the caliper body upward.

  12. Object Number: 105285 Size: SH
  13. Remove the inboard and outboard pads from the anchor bracket.

  14. Object Number: 142015 Size: SH
  15. Remove and inspect the pad retainers.
  16. Install a large C-clamp over the body of the brake caliper with the C-clamp ends against the rear of the caliper body and against an old inner brake pad or a wood block installed against the caliper piston.
  17. Tighten the C-clamp until the caliper piston is compressed completely into the caliper bore.
  18. Remove the C-clamp and the old brake pad or wood block from the caliper.

Installation Procedure

Important:  Do not attempt to clean away corrosion. Corrosion is typically caused by damaged pin boots. Refer to Brake Caliper Bracket Overhaul .

  1. Inspect the caliper bolt suspension boots for cuts, tears, or deterioration. If damaged, replace the pin boots.
  2. Inspect the caliper pin bolts for damage or corrosion. Replace if damaged or corroded.
  3. Inspect the piston boot for deterioration, replace if damaged. Refer to Front Brake Caliper Overhaul .

  4. Object Number: 142015 Size: SH
  5. Install the brake pad retainers into the brake caliper bracket.

  6. Object Number: 105285 Size: SH
  7. Install both brake pads into the brake caliper bracket.

  8. Object Number: 105287 Size: SH
  9. Pivot the caliper down over the brake pads and into the brake caliper bracket.
  10. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

    Object Number: 105290 Size: SH
  11. Insert the lower caliper slide pin.
  12. Tighten
Tighten the caliper slide pin to 85 N·m (63 lb ft).

  13. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  14. Lower the vehicle.
  15. With the engine OFF, gradually apply the brake pedal to approximately 2/3 of its travel distance.
  16. Slowly release the brake pedal.
  17. Wait 15 seconds, then repeat steps 10-11 until a firm brake pedal apply is obtained; this will properly seat the brake caliper pistons and brake pads.
  18. Refill the brake fluid. Refer to Master Cylinder Reservoir Replacement .
  19. Burnish the pads and rotors. Refer to Brake Pad and Rotor Burnishing .
