Inspect the ambient air temperature sensor for obstructions or improper mounting.

Did you find and correct the condition?

Go to Step 8

Important: An improperly functioning engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor can affect the ambient air temperature reading. Refer to Air Temperature Description and Operation .

With a scan tool, inspect for current or history codes relating to the ECT in the PCM. Refer to Diagnostic System Check - Engine Controls in Engine Controls-3.5L or Diagnostic System Check - Engine Controls in Engine Controls-4.0L.

Important: An improperly functioning vehicle speed sensor (VSS) can affect the ambient air temperature reading.

With a scan tool, inspect for current or history codes relating to the VSS in the PCM. .Refer to Diagnostic System Check - Engine Controls in Engine Controls-3.5L or Diagnostic System Check - Engine Controls in Engine Controls-4.0L.

Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the ambient air temperature sensor. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Test the ambient air temperature sensor resistance. Refer to Sensor Resistance Table .

Does the resistance measure near the Sensor Resistance Table value?

System OK

Go to Step 7

Replace the ambient air temperature sensor. Refer to Ambient Air Temperature Sensor Replacement .

Did you complete the repair?

Go to Step 8

Operate the system in order to verify the repair.
