Radiator Replacement LX5

Tools Required

J 41623-B Cooler Quick Connect Tool

Removal Procedure

  1. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
  2. Remove the cooling fans. Refer to Engine Cooling Fan Replacement .

  3. Object Number: 527509  Size: SH
  4. Disconnect the upper and lower radiator hoses from the radiator and position aside.
  5. Slide the plastic cap off the lower quick connect joint.
  6. Disconnect the lower transaxle oil cooler line from the radiator using the J 41623-B .

  7. Object Number: 420666  Size: SH
  8. Remove the upper radiator seal.
  9. Remove the front headlamps. Refer to Headlamp Replacement in Lighting Systems.

  10. Object Number: 287612  Size: SH
  11. Remove the 2 condenser mounting bolts.

  12. Object Number: 287613  Size: SH
  13. Lift the condenser upward slightly in order to release the lower feet from the lower mounting features located at the front of the radiator.
  14. Lift the radiator up and out of the vehicle.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 287613  Size: SH
  1. Position the radiator behind the condenser.
  2. Important: Care should be taken when installing the condenser not to damage the lower attachment points of both the radiator and condenser.

  3. Position the condenser, aligning the lower feet to the lower mounting features located at the front of the radiator.

  4. Object Number: 287612  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

    Notice: The bolt retaining the condenser to the radiator end tank is a special length and should be the ONLY bolt used upon reinstallation. The use of a longer bolt will damage the radiator end tank.

  5. Install the condenser mounting bolts.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 13 N·m (115 lb in).

  7. Install the headlamps. Refer to Headlamp Replacement in Lighting Systems.

  8. Object Number: 420666  Size: SH
  9. Install the upper radiator seal.

  10. Object Number: 430130  Size: SH
  11. Push the lower transaxle oil cooler line into the radiator quick connect fitting, until a "click" is heard.
  12. Tug gently on the cooler line to ensure proper retention.
  13. Slide the plastic cap (1) over the quick connect joint.

  14. Object Number: 527509  Size: SH
  15. Install the upper and lower radiator hoses to the radiator.
  16. Install the cooling fans. Refer to Engine Cooling Fan Replacement .
  17. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .

Tools Required

J 37097-A Hose Clamp Remover/Installer

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the cooling fans. Refer to Engine Cooling Fan Replacement .

  2. Object Number: 130758  Size: SH
  3. Using the J 37097-A remove the clamp.
  4. Remove the outlet radiator hose from the radiator.
  5. Disconnect the lower transaxle oil cooler line from the radiator.

  6. Object Number: 420666  Size: SH
  7. Remove the upper radiator seal.
  8. Remove the headlamps. Refer to Headlamp Replacement in Lighting Systems.

  9. Object Number: 287612  Size: SH
  10. Remove the 2 condenser mounting bolts.

  11. Object Number: 287613  Size: SH

    Important: Care should be taken when removing the condenser not to damage the lower attachment points of both the radiator and condenser.

  12. Lift the condenser upward slightly in order to release the lower feet from the lower mounting features located at the front of the radiator.
  13. Lift the radiator up and out of the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

  1. Position the radiator behind the condenser.

  3. Position the condenser, aligning the lower feet to the lower mounting features located at the front of the radiator.

  4. Object Number: 287612  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure.   6. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 13 N·m (115 lb in).

  9. Install the upper radiator seal.

  10. Object Number: 527526  Size: SH

    Important: Ensure the lower transaxle oil cooler line is positioned upwards while tightening.

  11. Connect the lower transaxle oil cooler line into the radiator.
  12. Tighten
    Tighten the line to 31 N·m (23 lb ft).

  13. Connect the outlet radiator hose to the radiator.

  14. Object Number: 130758  Size: SH
  15. Using the J 37097-A to reposition the clamp.
  16. Install the cooling fans. Refer to Engine Cooling Fan Replacement .
