Shift Cable Adjustment

  1. Apply the parking brake.
  2. Place the shift control lever into the N (neutral) shift position.
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.

  5. Remove the retainer securing the shift cable to the transmission bracket.
  6. • Squeeze the cable retainers while pulling the cable towards the rear of the vehicle.

  7. Remove the shift cable end from the transmission control lever ball stud (shown without a transfer case).

  8. Object Number: 32583  Size: SH
  9. Remove the shift cable end from the transmission control lever ball stud (shown with a transfer case).
  10. Remove the shift cable from the shift cable bracket by pressing the locking tab on the shift cable in and pulling the shift cable back through the bracket.
  11. Place the transmission control lever in the mechanical neutral position by moving the transmission control lever to the full clockwise position, then move the control lever counterclockwise two detents.
  12. install the shift cable to the shift cable bracket by pulling the shift cable through the bracket while pressing in the locking tab until the shift cable is locked into place on the bracket.
  13. • Do not contact the shift cable when securing the locking tab to the bracket.

  14. Install the shift cable end to the transmission control lever ball stud (shown without a transfer case).

  17. Object Number: 32441  Size: SH
  18. Install the retainer securing the shift cable to the transmission bracket.
  19. Lower the vehicle.
  20. With the park brake engaged and the engine running, test the transmission and shift control for proper operation.
  21. • Ensure all of the transmission detent positions are attainable when moving the shift lever from P (park) through 1 (first low speed).
    • Ensure the transmission engages into gear except in P (park) and N (neutral) positions.
    • Ensure the key can only be removed from the start switch in the P (park) position.
    • Ensure the engine starts in the P (park) or N (neutral) positions only. Adjust the park/neutral position switch if required. Refer to Park/Neutral Back Up Switch Replacement .
  22. Position the shift control lever to the P (park) position.
  23. Shut off the engine.
  24. Release the parking brake.
