Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to General Lifting and Jacking in General Information.
  2. Remove the transfer case shield. Refer to Shield Replacement.
  3. Remove the front and rear propeller shafts. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement (4WD and AWD Models).
  4. Remove the vent hose from the transfer case vent.
  5. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the three speed sensors.
  6. Disconnect the electrical connector from the encoder/motor.
  7. Remove the wiring harness from the transfer case.
  8. Support the transfer case with a jack.

  10. Remove the bolts securing the transfer case to the transmission.
  11. Remove the transfer case from the transmission.

  12. Object Number: 2214  Size: SH
  13. Remove and discard the gasket.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 2214  Size: SH
  1. Install a new gasket to the transmission. Apply a thin coat of clear RTV in order to hold the gasket in place.

  2. Object Number: 2213  Size: SH
  3. Install the transfer case to the transmission.

  4. Object Number: 2217  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Install the bolts that secure the transfer case to the transmission.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 45 N·m (33 lb ft).

  7. Remove the jack from the transfer case.
  8. Connect the electrical connector to the three speed sensors.
  9. Connect the electrical connector to the encoder/motor.
  10. Install the vent hose to the transfer case vent.
  11. Install the front and rear propeller shafts. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement (4WD and AWD Models).
  12. Install the transfer case shield. Refer to Shield Replacement .
  13. • Check the transfer case oil level. Add oil as necessary. Refer to Approximate Fluid Capacities.
    • Lower the vehicle.
  14. Check the transfer case for normal operation.
