Crankshaft Balancer Remover/Holder |
Removal Procedure
- Remove the radiator intake baffle. Refer to
Air Intake Baffle Replacement - Radiator.
- Remove the grill. Refer to
Grille Replacement.
Important: When removing the diagonal brace, only remove the one bolt from the battery tray brace that is bolted to the radiator brace.
- Remove the radiator support diagonal brace. Refer to
Radiator Support Diagonal Brace Replacement.
- Remove the hood latch support. Refer to
Hood Latch Support Replacement.
- Remove the cooling fan and shroud. Refer to
Cooling Fan and Shroud Replacement.
- Remove the drive belt. Refer to
Drive Belt Replacement.
- Carefully loosen and remove the balancer bolt.
- Install
J 41816-2
into the end of the crankshaft.
Important: Do not pull on outer edge of the crankshaft balancer.
- Using the
J 44226
remove the balancer.
- Remove
J 44226
and
J 41816-2
.
- Remove the crankshaft balancer shim from the crankshaft snout.
- Clean and inspect the crankshaft balancer. Refer to
Crankshaft Balancer Cleaning and Inspection.
Installation Procedure
Important: The crankshaft balancer does not have a key-way; so the crankshaft could turn when tightening, causing an improper torque. Make sure to follow the installation procedure to prevent damage.
- Raise the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
- Remove the torque converter access plug in the dry part of the oil pan.
- Use the torque converter holding tool from the
J 44226
kit and secure the torque converter while tightening the crankshaft balancer.
- Install a new crankshaft balancer shim GM P/N 12573950 over the crankshaft snout, against the crankshaft gear.
- Using the
EN-48034
install and seat the crankshaft balancer.
- Remove the
EN-48034
.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.
- While still holding the flywheel, install the balancer washer and the bolt.
Tighten
Tighten the crankshaft balancer bolt to 150 N·m (110 lb ft). Use the
J 45059
in order to tighten the balancer bolt an additional 180 degrees.
- Remove the torque converter holding tool.
- Install the torque converter access plug into the oil pan.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Install the drive belt. Refer to
Drive Belt Replacement.
- Install the cooling fan and shroud. Refer to
Cooling Fan and Shroud Replacement.
- Install the hood latch support. Refer to
Hood Latch Support Replacement.
- Install the radiator diagonal brace. Refer to
Radiator Support Diagonal Brace Replacement.
- Install the grill. Refer to
Grille Replacement.
- Install the radiator air intake baffle. Refer to
Air Intake Baffle Replacement - Radiator.

Special Tools
Removal Procedure
- Remove the radiator. Refer to
Radiator Replacement.
- Remove the drive belt. Refer to
Drive Belt Replacement.
- Raise the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
- Remove the torque converter access plug in the dry part of the oil pan.
- Use the torque converter holding tool
EN 46547
and secure the torque converter while tightening the crankshaft balancer.
- Carefully loosen and remove the balancer bolt.
- Install
J 41816-2
into the
end of the crankshaft.
Important: Do not pull on outer edge of the crankshaft balancer.
- Use a
J 41816-A
with J 41816-3 jaw puller and remove the crankshaft balancer.
- Remove the 3 jaw puller and the
J 41816-2
.
- Remove the crankshaft balancer shim from the crankshaft snout.
- Clean and inspect the crankshaft balancer. Refer to
Crankshaft Balancer Cleaning and Inspection.
