Removal Procedure

Caution: Refer to Brake Dust Caution in the Preface section.

  1. Disable the Park Brake Automatic Adjuster. Refer to Parking Brake Cable Adjuster Disabling .
  2. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  4. Remove the park brake cable from the mounting bracket by depressing the locking tabs.
  5. Remove the rear park brake cable from the park brake actuator lever.

  7. Remove the rear brake caliper and mounting bracket assembly. Refer to Rear Brake Caliper Bracket Replacement in Disc Brakes.

  8. Object Number: 748573  Size: SH
  9. Remove the rear brake rotor.

  10. Object Number: 788488  Size: SH
  11. Remove the axle shaft. Refer to Rear Axle Shaft Replacement in Rear Drive Axle.

  12. Object Number: 790168  Size: SH
  13. Remove the park brake shoe. Refer to Parking Brake Shoe Replacement .

  14. Object Number: 370684  Size: SH
  15. Remove the backing plate bolts.
  16. Remove the park brake actuator lever housing from the backing plate.
  17. Using denatured alcohol, clean the backing plate and parking brake actuator.
  18. Using non-lubricated, filtered air, dry the backing plate.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 370684  Size: SH
  1. Install the park brake actuator lever housing to the backing plate.
  2. Perform the following procedure before installing the backing plate bolts.
  3. 2.1.  Remove all traces of the original adhesive patch.
    2.2. Clean the threads of the bolt with brake parts cleaner or the equivalent and allow to dry.
    2.3. Apply Threadlocker GM P/N 12345493 or Red LOCTITEâ„¢ #272 to the threads of the bolt.

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4. Install the backing plate bolts.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the backing plate bolts to 95 N·m (71 lb ft).

  6. Install the park brake shoe. Refer to Parking Brake Shoe Replacement .

  7. Object Number: 788488  Size: SH
  8. Install the axle shaft. Refer to Rear Axle Shaft Replacement in Rear Drive Axle.

  9. Object Number: 177201  Size: SH
  10. Adjust the park brake shoe (1). Refer to Park Brake Adjustment .

  11. Object Number: 748573  Size: SH
  12. Install the rear brake rotor.

  13. Object Number: 777351  Size: SH
  14. Install the rear park brake cable to the park brake actuator lever.

  15. Object Number: 777470  Size: SH
  16. Install the park brake cable to the mounting bracket, ensuring the locking tabs are secured.

  17. Object Number: 790034  Size: SH
  18. Install the rear brake caliper and mounting bracket assembly. Refer to Rear Brake Caliper Bracket Replacement in Disc Brakes.
  19. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  20. Lower vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  21. Enable the park brake automatic adjuster. Refer to Parking Brake Cable Adjuster Enabling .
