Subject: | SWC operation after OnStar® ADT upgrade |
Models: | 2000 - 2005 OnStar® GEN6 equipped vehicles with Steering Wheel Controls |
This PI was superseded to update Recommendation/Instructions. Please discard PIC4820.
The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.
Condition/Concern:
Some customers may report that the operation of the steering wheel controls (SWC) in relation to the OnStar® system has changed since the Analog to Digital upgrade was performed.
Recommendation/Instructions:
Vehicles with the GEN6 OnStar® system can invoke handsfree calling or activate the voice recognition for DTMF tones during a call only. Calls cannot be answered using the SWC. Handsfree calls must be ended using the white dot or phone button (call
answer/end) on the OnStar® keypad.
Note: 2002 - 2005 Cadillac Deville and 2002 - 2004 Cadillac Seville WITHOUT the NAV radio WILL be able to initiate and end a handsfree call due to the SWC having provisions for this operation. Calls CANNOT be answered from the SWC.
Some vehicles may require additional programming or have other issues preventing OnStar® SWC operation as listed below.
- 2002 - 2005 Cadillac Deville, 2002 - 2004 Cadillac Seville
The vehicle must be programmed as follows for the SWC to operate properly. With the Tech 2 enter the DIM (Dash Integration Module)>special function>set options menu.
• | Enter Miscellaneous options 1, turn on the PHONE option. |
| Important: The ignition switch needs to be cycled off and the driver's door open to cancel RAP (Retained Accessory Power) before completing the next step.
|
• | Enter the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster)>special function>set options menu>optional modules> No Phone. |
| Important: The ignition switch needs to be cycled off and the driver's door open to cancel RAP before completing the next step.
|
• | Cycle the ignition switch back on and Enter Vehicle Communication Interface Module (VCIM)>Special Function>VCIM set up and complete the programming for the options included in the vehicle. |
| Important: The ignition switch needs to be cycled off and the driver's door open to cancel RAP before completing the next step.
|
• | Key press into the OnStar® center and request a full unit configuration and that HFC (Hands Free Calling) be enabled. |
• | Cycle the key and cancel RAP. |
- 2003 2005 Cadillac CTS. If the vehicle is equipped with the navigation radio RPO (U2V) the steering wheel control 4 button assembly CANNOT be programmed to control any OnStar® functions. Also the voice recognition button will only interact with
the navigation system. OnStar® handsfree calling can only be activated using the call answer/end button on the mirror assembly. DTMF tones are not available since pressing the call answer/end button will end the handsfree call.
- 2005 - 2008 STS. If equipped with Navigation Radio RPO YQ4 the vehicle will have Bluetooth phone capabilities. When pressing the VR button on the steering wheel controls and saying "phone", "telephone" or "dial", the system will attempt to connect
to the Bluetooth phone. In order to make an OnStar® handsfree call using the SWC VR button, the owner must say "OnStar®" and then "dial". OnStar® Handsfree Calling will work from the call answer/end button on the mirror assembly.
Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
