General Motors has determined that certain 1992 Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser model vehicles may have been built with the heater outlet hose routed above the heater inlet hose assembly allowing the heater inlet hose to contact the A.I.R. piping. This contact may cause the heater inlet hose to become damaged by either abrasion or heat.
To prevent this condition from occurring, dealers are to properly route the heater outlet hose assembly and to inspect the inlet hose for damage, replacing the inlet hose if necessary.
Certain 1992 Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser model vehicles built within the following VIN breakpoints: Plant Through and Year Model Model Name Plant Code Beginning Including ---- ----- ---------- ----- ----- --------- ----------- 1992 B-wagon Custom Cruiser Willow Run W NW301363 NW301569
About 23% of the vehicles within the breakpoints listed above were corrected at the assembly plant prior to being shipped to the dealer and will not require inspection/correction by the dealer. All subject vehicles which are listed on the dealers campaign printout will require inspection, and, as necessary, correction as outlined In the SERVICE PROCEDURE section of this bulletin. Other suspect vehicles should be checked for campaign involvement by utilizing the Vehicle Information Service System (V.I.S.S.).
Dealers are to service all vehicles involved in this campaign, at no charge to owners, regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or ownership.
Whenever a vehicle subject to this campaign is taken into your new or used car inventory, or it is in your dealership for service, you are to ensure the campaign correction has been made before selling or releasing the vehicle.
Dealers are to contact owners of vehicles recently sold from your new or used vehicle Inventory and arrange for the campaign correction to be performed.
1. Raise hood and determine if the heater inlet hose is routed below the heater outlet hose as shown in the "INCORRECT" illustration on Page 3.
2. If the heater inlet hose is installed under the heater outlet hose, perform the "REROUTING PROCEDURE" below.
3. If the heater inlet hose is routed as shown in "CORRECT" illustration on Page 3, no further action is necessary. Install a Campaign Identification Label.
1. Park the vehicle on a level surface.
2. Remove the pressure cap from the radiator when the engine is cool by:
Slowly rotating counterclockwise to detent (Do NOT press down while rotating).
Wait until any left over pressure is released (indicated by a hissing sound).
After all hissing stops, press down on cap while continuing to rotate counterclockwise.
TO AVOID BEING BURNED, DO NOT REMOVE RADIATOR CAP WHILE THE ENGINE IS AT NORMAL OPERATING TEMPERATURE. COOLING SYSTEM WILL RELEASE SCALDING FLUID AND STEAM UNDER PRESSURE IF THE CAP IS REMOVED WHILE THE ENGINE AND RADIATOR ARE STILL HOT.
3. With a clean drain pan in place, open radiator drain valve.
4. Once enough fluid has drained out of the radiator:
Remove the screw from the heater outlet hose bracket to the cowl panel.
Remove the heater outlet hose from the heater core tube (inboard tube) by squeezing both release tabs of quick connect fitting at the base of the heater core tube and pulling on the pipe to disengage the fitting (see quick connect fitting illustration on Page 3).
5. Inspect the inlet hose for signs of severe chafing and/or wear through (note that very few hoses are expected to be chafed or worn). If an inlet hose does require replacement, install a new hose following the procedures on Pages 1 B-26 and 1 B-27 of the 1992 Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser Service Manual.
6. Reposition the outlet hose properly (under the heater inlet hose), align orientation tabs with groves and push the hose fitting into place, then pull back on the hose to ensure proper installation of the connector.
Also, make certain the quick connect fitting orientation tabs are aligned correctly before connecting the quick connect fitting. If the quick connect fitting is incorrectly connected, coolant leakage and damage to parts may occur. The quick connect fitting must be pushed on, then pulled back to verify proper connector engagement.
Do not rely on an audible click or visual verification to check for a proper connection. If it is necessary to repair the quick connect, use the approved service kit which can be obtained from GMSPO (P/N 10164697).
7. Install the outlet hose bracket and screw to the cowl panel.
8. Check the outboard inlet hose for clearance to the A.I.R. pipe. Also, check to assure the protective sleeve on the heater outlet hose is under the heater inlet hose.
9. Close the radiator drain valve, and pour the drained coolant into the radiator until the tank is filled.
10. Start the engine and run five minutes (or until the inlet hose is hot).
11. Top off the radiator with coolant and install cap.
12. Fill the coolant recovery reservoir to the hot line with a 50/50 mix of water and ethylene glycol which meets GM specification 1825-M (P/N 1052753), or equivalent.
13. Install a Campaign Identification Label.
Each label provides space to print the campaign number, and the five (5) digit dealer code of the dealer performing the campaign. Insert this information with a typewriter or ball-point pen. When installing label, clean and dry the surface of the radiator support tie bar and apply the campaign label where it is readily visible.
Although most vehicles involved in this campaign will NOT require any parts to complete this campaign, a very small number of vehicles could experience a severely chafed and/or worn inlet hose. If a vehicle is found which requires a new inlet hose, order the appropriate replacement hose from GMSPO. Due to the limited number of inlet hoses available (and to assure availability of parts for vehicles which experience a severely chafed or worn inlet hose), do NOT order an inlet hose unless you have inspected and determined that a vehicle has a severely worn or chafed inlet hose.
To ensure parts are obtained as soon as possible, order them from GM Service Parts Operations (GMSPO) on a C.I.O. order, with NO special instruction code, but order on an advise code (2). Use the following part numbers:
Description Part Number Quantity Per Vehicle ----------- ----------- -------------------- Vlv - Heater Water Flow Control/With 10165021 1, as required Hose & Brkts
Submit claims using only one of the "V" labor-ops below for each vehicle.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
