Removal Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 22794 Spark Plug Port Adapter
    • J 5892-D Valve Spring Compressor
    • J 38606 Valve Spring Compressor

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the valve rocker covers. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Removal (Left Side) (front) Valve Rocker Arm Cover Removal (Right Side) (rear).
  3. Remove the spark plug. Refer to Spark Plug Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  4. Remove the rocker arm. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .
  5. Install the J 22794 to the spark plug port.
  6. Apply compressed air in order to hold the valves in place.
  7. Compress the valve spring. Use the J 5892-D or the J 38606 .
  8. Measure the following items:
  9. • The valve locks
    • The valve cap
    • The valve spring

  10. Remove the valve stem oil seal.

Installation Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 5892-D Valve Spring Compressor
    • J 38606 Valve Spring Compressor
  1. Install the valve stem oil seal. Use the plastic sleeve provided. Press the oil seal over the valve guide boss.

  2. Object Number: 54389  Size: SH
  3. Assemble the following items:
  4. • The spring seat
    • The valve spring
    • The valve cap
  5. Compress the valve spring. Use the J 38606 or the J 5892-D .
  6. Install the valve locks. Hold the valve locks in place with grease if needed.
  7. Release the valve spring. Ensure that the valve locks are seated.
  8. Install the spark plug. Refer to Spark Plug Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  9. Install the rocker arm. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .
  10. Install the valve rocker covers. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Removal (Left Side) (front) or Valve Rocker Arm Cover Removal (Right Side) (rear).

  12. Connect the negative battery cable.
