Powertrain Control Module (PCM)

Notice: In order to prevent internal damage to the PCM, the ignition must be OFF when disconnecting or reconnecting the PCM connector.

Service of the PCM should normally consist of either replacement of the PCM, EEPROM re-programming.

If the diagnostic procedures call for the PCM to be replaced, the PCM should be checked first to see if it is the correct part. DTC P0601 indicates the EEPROM programming has malfunctioned. When DTC P0601 is obtained, re-program the EEPROM.

Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the LH hush panel.

  3. Object Number: 72295 Size: SH
  4. Loosen the PCM connector screws (1).

  5. Object Number: 102470 Size: SH

Notice: Do not touch the PCM connector pins or soldered components on the circuit board in order to prevent possible electrostatic discharge (ESD) damage. Do not remove the integrated circuit boards from the carrier.

  6. Disconnect the PCM electrical connectors.
  7. Remove the PCM Retainer.
  8. Slide the PCM from the PCM bracket.

Installation Procedure

Remove the new PCM from its packaging and check the service number to make sure it is the same number or updated number as the faulty PCM.

  1. Slide the PCM into the PCM bracket.
  2. Install the PCM Retainer.
  3. Notice: Do not touch the PCM connector pins or soldered components on the circuit board in order to prevent possible electrostatic discharge (ESD) damage. Do not remove the integrated circuit boards from the carrier.

    Object Number: 102470 Size: SH
  4. Install the PCM electrical connectors.
  5. Tighten the PCM connector screws (1).
  6. Install the LH hush panel.
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8. Important :  Replacement PCMs must be reprogrammed and the crankshaft position system variation learn procedure must be performed.

  9. Program the EEPROM.
  10. The PCM will need to relearn the crankshaft variation. Refer to Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn .

EEPROM Programming

    Object Number: 72295 Size: SH
  1. Set-up -- Ensure that the following conditions have been met:
  2. • The battery is fully charged and a battery charger is disconnected.
    • The ignition is ON.
    • The Techline equipment cable connection at the DLC is secure.
  3. Program the PCM using the latest software matching the vehicle. Refer to up-to-date Techline equipment users instructions.
  4. If the PCM fails to program, proceed as follows:
  5. •  Ensure that all PCM connections are OK.
    •  Check the Techline equipment for the latest software version.
    •  Attempt to program the PCM. If the PCM still cannot be programmed properly, replace the PCM. You must program the replacement PCM.

Functional Check

  1. Perform the Powertrain On Board Diagnostic (OBD) System Check .
  2. Start the engine and the engine run for one minute.
  3. Use the scan tool in order to scan for the DTCs.
