CAMPAIGN: CUTLASS MODELS W/HEAVY DUTY STEEL WHEELS

CONDITION

GENERAL MOTORS HAS DETERMINED THAT A DEFECT WHICH RELATES TO MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY EXISTS IN SOME 1981 CUTLASS MODELS EQUIPPED WITH HEAVY DUTY STEEL WHEELS. SOME OF THE WHEELS USED ON THESE VEHICLES MAY FRACTURE CAUSING A PARTIAL OR COMPLETE SEPARATION OF THE WHEEL AND TIRE FROM THE VEHICLE. IF THIS SEPARATION OCCURS WHILE THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION, IT MAY RESULT IN A LOSS OF CONTROL AND A VEHICLE CRASH COULD OCCUR WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING.

CARS AFFECTED

CERTAIN 1981 CUTLASS MODELS EQUIPPED WITH HEAVY DUTY STEEL WHEELS OPTION N85, MANUFACTURED BY KELSEY HAYES WHICH HAVE THE CODES K1 80 H 26.

DEALER ACTION

DEALERS ARE TO INSPECT WHEELS AS INSTRUCTED IN THE SERVICE PROCEDURE OF THIS BULLETIN. WHEELS WITH CODES SHOWN IN ILLUSTRATIO ARE TO BE REPLACED. IF THE CODES CANNOT BE DETERMINED, THE WHEEL IS TO BE REPLACED.

DEALERS ARE TO PERFORM THIS RECALL CAMPAIGN AT NO CHARGE TO THE OWNER ON AFFECTED VEHILCES, REGARDLESS OF TIME, MILEAGE OR OWNERSHIP, AND ARE TO CORRECT ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES IN DEALER NEW AND USED CAR INVENTORY PRIOR TO THEIR SALE.

WHENEVER A VEHICLE SUBJECT TO THIS CAMPAIGN IS TAKEN INTO YOUR NEW OR USED CAR INVENTORY IN THE FUTURE, YOU SHOULD TAKE THE STEPS NECESSARY TO BE SURE THE CAMPAIGN CORRECTION HAS BEEN MADE BEFORE RESELLING THE VEHICLE.

DEALERS ARE TO PERFORM THE CAMPAIGN SERVICES ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES AS THEY ARE BROUGHT IN FOR ANY KIND OF SERVICE UNTIL ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES HAVE BEEN CORRECTED.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. REMOVE WHEEL TRIM FROM ALL FOUR (4) WHEELS TO EXPOSE THE WHEEL CODES SHOWN IN ILLUSTRATION.

2. INSTPECT AND REPLACE ALL TX WHEELS WHICH HAVE THE CODES "K1 80 H 26" ON CENTER SECTION AS SHOWN IN ILLUSTRATION. PROCEED TO STEP 3 IF A WHEEL DOESN'T REQUIRE REPLACING.

NOTE: IF THE CODES ON A WHEEL CANNOT BE ACCURATELY DETERMINED, WHEEL SHOULD BE REPLACED.

A. OBTAIN NEW SERVICE WHEEL AND VALVE STEM FROM PARTS DEPT.

B. COLOR COAT WHEEL (S).

C. INSTALL NEW VALVE STEM IN WHEEL.

D. IF THE WHITE HIGHT POINT MARK ON THE TIRE IS STILL VISIBLE, THE TIRE SHOULD BE REINSTALLED ON THE REPLACEMENT WHEEL SO THAT THE ARROW IN THE WHEEL BOLT CIRCLE POINTS TO THIS MARK.

E. IF THE ORIGINAL HIGH POINT MARK CANNOT BE FOUND ON THE TIRE, MARK THE TIRE WHERE THE ARROW ON THE ORIGINAL WHEEL POINTED. THEN INSTALL THE TIRE ON THE NEW WHEEL SO THAT ITS ARROW ALSO POINTS AT THIS MARK.

F. BALANCE WHEEL AND TIRE ASSEMBLY.

G. INSTALL WHEEL AND TIRE ASSEMBLY ON VEHICLE TORQUING NUTS TO 110 N.M (80 FT.LBS.)

3. REINSTALL WHEEL TRIM.

4. INSTALL YELLOW CAMPAIGN CORRECTION LABEL I1-C-6 ON RADIATOR BAFFLE WHERE IT IS READILY VISIBLE.

PARTS INFORMATION

THE FOLLOWING PARTS ARE TO BE OBTAINED AS REQUIRED FROM YOUR PARTS STOCK OR GENERAL MOTORS PARTS.

WHEEL ASSEMBLY 9590753 TIRE VALVE STEM 274083

TO INSURE THESE PARTS WILL BE OBTAINED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, THEY SHOULD BE ORDERED FROM GMWDD ON A C.I.O ORDER WITH NO SPECIAL INSTRUCTION CODE, BUT ORDER ON AN ADVISE CODE (2).

PARTS REMOVED FROM THE INVOLVED VEHICLES ARE TO BE HELD FOR DISPOSITION BY AN OLDSMOBILE REPRESENTATIVE.

WARRANTY CLAIM INFORMATION

DEALERS ARE TO SUBMIT CLAIMS ON THE CAMPAIGN CARDS FURNISHED WITH THE PRINTOUT USING THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION.

DEALERS MUST LIST PART NUMBER AND QUANTITY OF WHEELS REPLACED.

LABOR OPERATION HOURS LISTED INCLUDE .4 HOUR TO COLOCOAT EACH WHEEL PLUS .2 HOURS MIX TIME (FOR 1 TO 4 WHEELS), PLUS 2.86 MATERIAL ALLOWANCE FOR EACH WHEEL. ON VEHICLES WITH LOCKING WHEEL COVERS (OPTION N91) AN ADDITIONAL .1 HOUR IS INCLUDED. PARTS WILL BE CREDITED AT DEALER NET, PLUS 30% DEALER HANDLING ALLOWANCE.

.1 HOUR FOR CLERICAL ADMINISTRATION WILL BE ADDED TO THE ABOVE OPERATION. TO SUBMIT A CLAIM ON CARS CORRECTED BUT NOT ON YOUR PRINTOUT, USE A YELLOW STRIPE CARD.

CREDIT FOR THIS CAMPAIGN WILL BE ISSUED ON THE DEALERS MONTHLY PARTS STATEMENT.
