START OF PRODUCTION 1994, (AND 1993 PULL-AHEAD MODEL 3 BHW (USED IN THE OLDSMOBILE CUTLASS SUPREME WITH 3.1L ENGINE (RP0 L82)) HYDRA-MATIC 4T60-E (RP0 M13) TRANSAXLES HAVE NEW VEHICLE WIRE HARNESS AND TRANSAXLE ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR (7 WAY) (35) PIN-OUT SEQUENCE. THE WIRE SCHEMATIC MODIFICATION FROM 1993-94 MAKE THE CURRENT TRANSMISSION TEST HARNESS J 38791-10 AND J 38791-20 USED ON TRANSMISSION TEST BOX (J 38791) OBSOLETE FOR 1994.

THE ADDITION OF THE TEMPERATURE SENSOR (450) IN 1994 HYDRA-MATIC 4T60-E TRANSAXLES CAUSED THE NEED FOR THE PIN-OUTS TO BE COMPLETELY OVERHAULED. SINCE THE TEMPERATURE SENSOR REQUIRED TWO PINS ON THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR (7 WAY) AND ONLY ONE WAS AVAILABLE, IT BECAME NECESSARY TO COMBINE THE POWER SOURCE (12 VOLTS) TO ONE PIN-OUT INSTEAD OF THE PRIOR TWO PIN-OUTS.

A NEW TRANSMISSION TEST HARNESS (J 38791-60) HAS BEEN DEVELOPED FOR ALL 1994 AND 1993 PULL-AHEAD MODELS (3 BHW) HYDRA-MATIC 4T60-E TRANSAXLES. FAILURE TO USE TEST HARNESS J 38791-60 ON 1994 AND 1993 PULL-AHEAD MODELS WILL CAUSE ERRONEOUS OUTPUTS AND MAY CAUSE INTERNAL ELECTRICAL TRANSAXLE DAMAGE.

SERVICE INFORMATION:

J 38791-60 WILL BE SHIPPED TO ALL CHEVROLET, OLDSMOBILE, AND CADILLAC DEALERS BY DECEMBER OF 1993. UNTIL J 38791-60 IS AVAILABLE, TEN (10) HARNESSES WILL BE AVAILABLE ON A LOAN BASIS UNDER PART NUMBER J 38791-60-LNR. THESE LOANER HARNESSES ARE AVAILABLE BY CALLING THE KENT-MOORE ORDER DEPARTMENT AT 1-800-345-2233.

NOTE: PONTIAC DOES NOT CONSIDER J38791 AN ESSENTIAL TOOL. INSTEAD, PONTIAC USES KENT-MOORE TOOL J38835, TRANSAXLE ELECTRICAL JUMPER, TO DIAGNOSIS 4T60-E ELECTRICAL CONCERNS. NO CHANGE TO J38835 IS REQUIRED DUE TO THE 1994 PIN-OUT CHANGE. HOWEVER, ALL TECHNICIANS MUST BE AWARE OF THE NEW PIN-OUT SEQUENCE WHEN DIAGNOSING.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
