CAMPAIGN: CATALYTIC CONVERTER UPPER COVER OMITTED

Models/Years 1984 Cutlass Supremes and Cutlass Calais' Equipped with 5.0L (LV2) V-8 Gasoline Engine

CONDITION

General Motors has determined that some 1984 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme and Cutlass Calais models, equipped with a 5.0L (LV2) V-8 gasoline engine, may have been assembled with the upper cover omitted from the catalytic converter. This cover provides additional insulation between the top of the converter and the underbody.

VEHICLES INVOLVED

Involved are certain early production 1984 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme and Cutlass Calais models equipped with 5.0L (LV2) V-8 gasoline engines between the following serial number.

Not all vehicles within the serial number ranges listed and equipped with a 5.0L (LV2) V-8 gasoline engine were produced without insulation and an upper cover on the catalytic converter. Oldsmobile records indicate 257 vehicles must be inspected to locate approximately 170 misbuilt catalytic converters.

DEALER ACTION

To correct this condition on vehicles involved the catalytic converter will require inspection for the presence of an upper cover. If no upper cover is present the catalytic converter is to be replaced.

Dealers are to service all vehicles subject to this campaign at no charge to the owner, regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or ownership, from this time forward.

Whenever a vehicle subject to this campaign is taken into your new or used vehicle inventory, or it is in your dealership for service in the future, you should take the steps necessary to be sure the campaign correction has been made before reselling or releasing the vehicle.

Owners of vehicles recently sold from your new vehicle inventory are to be contacted by the dealer, and arrangement made to make the required modification according to instructions contained in this bulletin.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

I. Inspection Only

1. Inspect the upper half of the catalytic converter for the presence of an upper cover around the converter. Inspection can be performed without raising the vehicle on a hoist. Refer to Fig. 1 for identification of the upper cover.

2. Proceed with Part II, Step 1 if no upper cover is present.

3. If the converter is equipped with an upper cover proceed to Part II, step 6.

II. Replacement of Catalytic Converter

1. Install seat and fender covers and raise the vehicle on a hoist.

2. Remove both converter clamps and brackets.

3. Remove the A.I.R. clamp and pipe.

4. Remove the converter (Using a torch to heat the joints).

5. Install a new converter. Reverse the above steps to complete the installation of the catalytic converter.

6. Install a Campaign Identification label. Each vehicle modified in accordance with the instruction outlined in this Service Procedure will require a Campaign Identification label. Each label provides a space to include the campaign number, the five (5) digit dealer code of the dealer performing the campaign service, and the date vehicle was campaigned. This information may be inserted with a typewriter or ballpoint pen. When installing label, clean the surface of the radiator upper mounting support and apply the campaign label where it is readily visible.

To insure these parts will be obtained as soon as possible, they should be ordered from GM Parts (WDDGM) on a C.I.O. order with NO special instruction code, but order on an advise code (2).

Parts are to be retained for disposition by zone personnel.
