Damaged Cage Nut Service Forward Crossmember Nut

Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
  2. Remove the bumper front impact bar. Refer to Front Bumper Impact Bar Replacement in Bumpers

  3. Object Number: 163971  Size: SH
  4. Remove the frame bolt from the damaged frame crossmember nut.
  5. Break the spot welds on only one side of the frame crossmember nut retainer using a chisel.
  6. The frame crossmember nut retainer will be reused if it has not been damaged by the stripped out bolt.

  7. Pry the frame crossmember nut retainer upwards just far enough to remove the damaged nut.
  8. Remove the damaged frame crossmember nut.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 163971  Size: SH
  1. Install a new frame crossmember nut.
  2. Pry the frame crossmember nut retainer downwards against the frame.
  3. Make sure the frame crossmember nut moves freely between the frame crossmember and the retainer.

  4. Spot weld the frame crossmember nut retainer into place.
  5. Clean the welded surfaces.
  6. Apply a two-part catalyzed primer to the spot welded area with a brush.
  7. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  8. Install the new frame bolt.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the frame front bolts to 135 N·m  (100 lb ft).

  10. Install the front impact bar. Refer to Front Bumper Impact Bar Replacement in Bumpers.
  11. Connect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.

Damaged Cage Nut Service Rearward Crossmember Nut

Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
  2. Remove the frame. Refer to Frame Replacement .

  3. Object Number: 163998  Size: SH
  4. Clean any sound deadening or corrosive materials away from the frame crossmember nut access cover.
  5. Remove the frame crossmember nut access cover using a flat-bladed tool.

  6. Object Number: 163971  Size: SH
  7. Break the spot welds on only one side of the frame crossmember nut retainer using a chisel.
  8. The frame crossmember nut retainer will be reused if it has not been damaged by the stripped out bolt.

  9. Pry the frame crossmember nut retainer upwards just far enough to remove the damaged nut.
  10. Remove the damaged frame crossmember nut.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install a new frame crossmember nut.
  2. Pry the frame crossmember nut retainer downwards against the frame.
  3. Make sure the frame crossmember nut moves freely between the frame crossmember and the retainer.

  4. Spot weld the frame crossmember nut retainer into place.

  8. Install the rear frame crossmember nut access cover.
  9. Install the frame. Refer to Frame Replacement .
  10. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
