Action

There are binding ball joints.

  1. Inspect the ball joints. Refer to Ball Stud and Knuckle Inspection in Front Suspension.
  2. Replace the ball joints as needed. Refer to Lower Control Arm Ball Joint Replacement in Front Suspension.

The front wheels are out of alignment.

  1. Inspect the front wheel alignment. Refer to Wheel Alignment Measurement in Front Suspension.
  2. Perform the front wheel alignment. Refer to Wheel Alignment Measurement in Front Suspension.

There is a sticking steering gear valve.

  1. Flush the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Flushing .
  2. Refill the power steering system. Refer to Checking and Adding Power Steering Fluid .
  3. Bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .
  4. Replace the power steering gear if the symptom persists. Refer to Steering Gear Replacement .

The steering gear is loose.

Tighten the steering gear mounting bolts to specification. Refer to Steering Gear Replacement .

The intermediate steering shaft bolt torque is too high.

Tighten the intermediate steering shaft bolt to specification.

Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column-Tilt.

The rack bearing preload is misadjusted.

Tighten the rack bearing preload to specification.

Refer to Steering Gear Rack Bearing Preload Adjustment - Off Vehicle .

The steering column is binding.

  1. Inspect the steering column alignment.
  2. Adjust the steering column alignment as needed. Refer to Steering Column Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column-Tilt.
  3. Inspect the steering column mounting.
  4. Repair the steering column mounting as needed. Refer to Steering Column Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column-Tilt.
  5. Inspect the steering column bearing.
  6. Replace the steering column. Refer to Steering Column Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column-Tilt.

There is incorrect tire pressure.

Inflate the tires to specification.
