Action

The steering column steering shaft is loose or worn.

  1. Inspect the joints from the column to the steering gear for correct torque. Refer to Fastener Tightening Specifications in Steering Wheel and Column-Tilt.
  2. Replace the joints from the column to steering gear as needed. Refer to Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle and Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Assemble - Off Vehicle in Steering Wheel and Column-Tilt.

The power steering gear is loose.

Tighten the steering gear mounting bolts to specifications. Refer to Fastener Tightening Specifications .

The tie rods are loose.

  1. Inspect the tie rods. Refer to Power Steering System Inspection .
  2. Replace the inner and outer tie rods as needed. Refer to Rack and Pinion Outer Tie Rod End Replacement or Steering Linkage Inner Tie Rod Replacement .

The wheel bearings are loose or worn.

Replace the following component: Refer to Front Wheel Bearing and Hub Replacement in Front Suspension.
