Assembly Procedure


    Object Number: 299888  Size: SH
  1. Apply lithium grease to the exposed shaft engagement areas and then install the steering shaft (2) to the centering sphere (1).

  2. Object Number: 323001  Size: SH

    Important: Replace steering column support assembly after column has been staked 3 times.

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the steering column support assembly (2) to the steering column jacket assembly (3) by using 4 torx head screws (1).
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the screws to 17 N·m (13 lb ft).

  5. Install the lower steering shaft assembly from the steering column jacket assembly.

  6. Object Number: 377019  Size: SH
  7. Install the upper tilt head assembly onto the steering column support assembly.

  8. Object Number: 299893  Size: SH
  9. Install 2 pivot pins (1).
  10. Stake the pivot pins in 3 locations.

  11. Install the adapter and bearing assembly (4).
  12. Install the lower bearing seat (3). The lower bearing seat must be in contact with the adapter and bearing assembly.
  13. Install the lower bearing spring (2).
  14. Install the lower spring retainer (1).

  15. Object Number: 445064  Size: SH
  16. Press the lower spring retainer (1) to compress the lower bearing spring (2).
  17. Measure the distance from the adapter and bearing assembly (3) to the lower spring retainer (2).
  18. The spring height must equal 15.00 mm (.6 inch).

  20. The upper steering shaft assembly must be rotated to the center position with the block tooth (1) in the 12 o'clock position.

  21. Object Number: 323005  Size: SH
  22. Install the analog extended range sensor assembly (1).
  23. 14.1. Rotate the center of the sensor until the pin slides completly into the locating hole. The center of the sensor will lock up when centered. It may take up to 5 revolutions.
    14.2. Push the sensor onto the steering shaft assembly.
    14.3. Remove the pin from the sensor.

  24. Install the sensor retainer (1). Align the slots of the sensor retainer to the ribs of the adapter and bearing assembly. Push the sensor retainer (1) until it contacts the analog extended range sensor assembly.
  25. Install the steering shaft seal (2).
  26. Install the pivot and pulse switch assembly. Refer to Windshield Wiper and Washer Switch Assembly - Assemble - Off Vehicle
  27. Install the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly. Refer to Turn Signal and Multifunction Switch Assembly - Assemble - Off Vehicle
