Removal Procedure

Caution: Keep hands, tools, and clothing away from the electric engine coolant fans in order to help prevent personal injury. These fans are electric and can turn on whether or not the engine is running. The fans can start automatically with the ignition in the ON position.

  1. Disconnect the battery ground (negative) cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
  2. Remove the engine mount strut. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 3.5L.
  3. Remove the engine mount strut bracket from the upper radiator support. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Bracket Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 3.5L.

  4. Object Number: 368749 Size: SH
  5. Disconnect the cooling fan wiring harness from the engine wiring harness.

  6. Object Number: 368751 Size: SH
  7. Remove the cooling fan shroud bolts.
  8. Remove the RH radiator bracket.
  9. Remove the cooling fan shroud with the electric cooling fan motors and cooling fans.

  10. Object Number: 308945 Size: SH
  11. Disconnect the cooling fan wiring harness from each cooling fan motor.

  12. Object Number: 308979 Size: SH
  13. Remove the cooling fan heat shield.

  14. Object Number: 381377 Size: SH
  15. Remove the cooling fan blade nut(s).
  16. Remove the cooling fan blade(s).
  17. Caution: If a fan blade is bent or damaged in any way, do not repair or reuse the damaged part. Always replace a bent or damaged fan blade. Fan blades that have been damaged can not be assured of proper balance and could fail and fly apart during subsequent use. This creates an extremely dangerous situation.

The fan blades must remain in proper balance. You cannot assure fan blade balance once a fan blade has been bent or damaged. A fan blade that is not in proper balance could fail and fly apart during use, creating an extremely dangerous situation.

  18. Inspect the cooling fan(s) for the following conditions:
  19. 12.1. Bent or cracked cooling fan blades
12.2. Smoothness of the cooling fan blade mating surfaces
12.3. Remove burrs or other imperfections as necessary

    Object Number: 381381 Size: SH
  20. Remove the cooling fan motor(s).

Installation Procedure

    Object Number: 381381 Size: SH
  1. Install the cooling fan motor(s).
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the cooling fan motor(s) bolts.
  4. Tighten
Tighten the cooling fan motor bolts to 6 N·m (53 lb in).
