A clamp is used when servicing the muffler section of the exhaust pipe. U-bolt and single-nut compression are two types of clamps used for connecting the exhaust system joint. These clamps create a mechanical seal by crimping the outer exhaust tubing, in a 360 degree circumference around the pipe, against the inner tubing. In order to prevent leakage, prior to assembly, coat the slip-joints with the exhaust system sealer. Correct alignment of the clamp is necessary to avoid contact with the underbody or components of the vehicle.
