GM Service Manual Online
For 1990-2009 cars only

The steering column includes important features in addition to the steering function:

    • In a front-end collision the energy absorbing column is designed to collapse to minimize the possibility of injury to the driver.
    • A locked column lock acts as a theft deterrent by preventing the operation of steering.
    • The multifunction turn signal level also controls the following:
       - Turn signal operation.
       - Wiper/Washer operation.
       - Controls the cruise control.

Use only the specified screws/bolts and nuts and tighten them to their specified torque to ensure the energy absorbing action of the column assembly. Apply a thin coat of lithium grease to all friction points during assembly.

Handle the removed column assembly with special care. The following could shear or loosen the plastic fastener that keeps the column assembly rigid:

    • Do not use a steering wheel puller other than the one recommended in this manual.
    • Avoid any sharp blows to the end of the steering shaft.
    • Do not lean on the assembly.
    • Do not drop the assembly.
