Adjustment Procedure
The first part of this procedure verifies that the shift cable is installed
correctly, without tension. Perform the following steps:
- Turn the ignition switch to OFF (unlock) position.
- Place the shift lever at Neutral (N).
- Unlock the shift cable at the transaxle the shift arm in order
to eliminate tension.
- Lock the shift cable.
- Place the shift lever
at PARK (P).
- Inspect the shift indicator for proper adjustment. Refer to
Shift Indicator Adjustment
.
- Inspect the neutral start switch for proper operation. Refer to
DTC P1520 Park/Neutral Position (PNP) Switch Circuit
in Automatic Transaxle - 4T65-E.
- Inspect the BTSI for proper operation.
If the condition still exists, continue with this procedure.
Removal Procedure

Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing
any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to
the vehicle or its components.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Remove the left-hand sound insulator.
- Remove the right-hand sound insulator.
- Disconnect the electrical connector.
- Remove the BTSI solenoid (2) from the steering column lower
support using the J 38778
.
- Remove the BTSI solenoid (2) from the shift control cable
using a flat-beaded screwdriver.
Installation Procedure
- Lengthen the BTSI solenoid (1).
- Snap the BTSI solenoid onto the shift control cable.
- Snap the BTSI solenoid onto the steering column lower support
bracket.
- Connect the electrical connector.
- Install the left-hand sound insulator.
- Connect the negative battery cable.
- Shift the transmission from (P) Park to (N) Neutral.
- Shift the transmission back to (P) Park in order to adjust the
BTSI solenoid (2).
