The supplemental inflatable restraint (SIR) system supplements the restraint of the driver and the passenger seat belts. The SIR system deploys an air bag from the following locations during an accident:

The air bags deploy when the vehicle is involved in a front end collision of sufficient force. In order to further absorb the energy of an accident, a knee bolster is located beneath the instrument panel in the driver and the passenger areas.
