Accessing the Rear Video Self-Test

To enter the rear video self-test mode, perform the following procedure:

  1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine off.
  2. Lower the video display screen. The display power indicator turns on and the display backlighting appears.
  3. Using the remote control, quickly press the following buttons:
  4. • Pause
    • Volume Down
    • Pause
    • Volume Down
  5. The display power indicator flashes four times to signal the beginning of the diagnostic self-test mode. The rear video self-test screen appears on the display. The display power indicator continues to flash four times as long as the video display remains in self-diagnostic mode. The message ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM TROUBLESHOOTING AID appears on the display.

Rear Video Self-Test Sequence

In the self-test mode, the video display prompts the technician through a series of actions (such as Please Turn On the Rear Seat Audio Control Module) or self-running steps (such as Right Speakers On). The system performs the stated function and displays a message on the screen.

Use the MENU ADJ arrows on the VCP remote control to move to the next or previous step of the sequence.

  1. Please Close and Open the Display. Tests that the opto sensor is working. The system displays OPTO SENSOR WORKING after the display has been closed and reopened.
  2. Grey Background. Allows the user to adjust color and to find display irregularities such as pixels out and tears. Note that the screen backlight is on. The system does not provide feedback (messages) to the user. The grey screen is not visible if the tape is playing.
  3. Red Background. Allows the user to adjust color and to find display irregularities such as pixels out and tears. The system does not provide feedback (messages) to the user. The red screen is not visible if the tape is playing.
  4. Night Color Bars. (Displays dim color bars.) Tests display colors with night setting intensity. The screen displays horizontal bars of colors white, red, green, blue and black. The color bars do not display properly if the tape is playing. The system does not provide feedback (messages) to the user. Go back and forth between dim and bright to verify.
  5. Day Color Bars. (Displays bright color bars.) Tests display colors with day setting intensity. The screen displays horizontal bars of colors white, red, green, blue and black. The color bars do not display properly if the tape is playing. The system does not provide feedback (messages) to the user. Go back and forth between dim and bright to verify.
  6. Left Speakers On. Sends a 1KHz tone to the left overhead console and liftgate speakers. Verifies speaker connections. The tone is set to medium volume.
  7. Right Speakers On. Sends a 1KHz tone to the right overhead console and liftgate speakers. Verifies speaker connections. The tone is set to medium volume.
  8. All Speaker On. Sends a 1KHz tone to the all speakers of the system. Verifies speaker connections. The tone is set to medium volume.
  9. Auxiliary Input. Switches to read audio/video from the auxiliary input lines. The screen displays AUXILIARY INPUT, then AUX VIDEO. The system does not automatically initiate play or any other function. The user must start playing a tape from an auxiliary VCP connected to the auxiliary RCA video jacks. Verifies video and audio.
  10. VCP Input Play. Switches to read audio/video from VCP input lines. The screen displays VCP INPUT and the system automatically starts playing the tape. Verifies video and audio.
  11. Overhead Console and Liftgate Speakers Off while playing movie. Turns the overhead and liftgate speakers off (audio muted) to all speakers.
  12. Please Turn on the Radio. Instructs the user to turn off the radio; the system detects if the radio is on. RADIO ON appears on the screen. If the radio is turned back off, the RADIO ON message is still displayed. (If the system is OK, it displays RADIO ON and plays audio through the front door speakers.)
  13. Front Door and Liftgate Speakers On while Playing the Radio. Turns the front door and liftgate speakers on. (If the system is OK, it plays audio from front door and liftgate speakers.)
  14. Liftgate Speakers Off While Playing the Radio. Turns the liftgate speakers off. The front door speakers remain on. (If the system is OK, no audio plays from liftgate speakers.)
  15. Please Turn on the Rear Seat Audio Control Module. Instructs the user to turn on the RSA module; the system detects if the RSA is on. RSA ON appears on the screen. If the RSA is turned back off, the RSA ON message is still displayed. The front speakers remain on.
  16. Headphone Ch A Tone/Ch B Tone. Sends a 1KHz tone only to the headphones of the system. Verifies that the headphones are tuned and working. The tone is set to medium volume. The front speakers remain on. (If the system is OK, it sounds a tone over channels A and B, left/right headphones.)
  17. Headphone Ch A Movie/Ch B Movie. Tests the headphone channels. The front speakers remain on. Before this step, verify the VCP is playing a tape. (If the system is OK, it plays movie audio over channels A and B, left/right headphones.)
  18. Headphone Ch A Movie/Ch B Radio. Tests the headphone channels. The front speakers remain on. Before this step, verify the VCP is playing a tape and the RSA is turned on. (If the system is OK, it plays movie audio over channel A, left/right headphones. It plays radio audio over channel B, left/right headphones.)
  19. Headphone Ch A Radio/Ch B Radio. Test the headphone channels. The front speakers remain on. Before this step, verify the RSA is turned on. (If the system is OK, it plays radio audio over channels A and B, left/right headphones.)
  20. Please Turn Off the Radio and RSA Control Module Power. Indicates that this part of the test is done. The message RSA and RADIO OFF appear on the display when the system detects that both have been turned off.
  21. VCP Pause. The system automatically pauses the tape in the VCP. The user must verify the operation.
  22. VCP Stop. The system automatically stops the tape in the VCP. The user must verify the operation. (Stops the tape in the VCP.)
  23. VCP Rewind. The system automatically rewinds the tape in the VCP. The user must verify the operation.
  24. VCP Forward. The system automatically fast-forwards the tape in the VCP. The user must verify the operation.
  25. VCP Eject. The system automatically stops and ejects the tape in the VCP. The user must verify the operation.
  26. Test Complete. This screen lets the user know that there are no more tests. Press POWER on the VCP remote control to exit from the self-test mode. The system powers down when exiting from the self-test mode.
