Removal Procedure
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
Caution: Failure to disconnect the intermediate shaft from the rack and pinion
stub shaft can result in damage to the steering gear and/or intermediate shaft.
This damage can cause loss of steering control which could result in personal
injury.
- Disconnect the intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Refer
to
Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement
in
Steering Wheel and Column.
- Use a utility stand in order to support the rear of the frame .
- Remove the frame rear bolts
- Lower the frame rear to gain clearance.
- Place the drain pan under the power steering pump and the power steering
gear.
- Remove the power steering gear hose clip.
- Disconnect the power steering pressure hose from the steering gear.
- Raise the rear of the frame.
- Install the frame bolts. Fully seat the frame bolts. Do NOT tighten the
frame bolts.
- Remove the utility stand.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Remove the drive belt. Refer to
Drive Belt Replacement
in Engine Mechanical-3.4L.
- Disconnect the power steering pressure hose
from the pump.
- Remove the power steering hose from the hose retainer.
- Remove the inlet hose.
Installation Procedure
- Install the inlet hose.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.
- Connect the power steering pressure hose to the pump.
Tighten
Tighten the fitting to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).
- Install the power steering hose retainer to the power steering gear.
- Install the drive belt. Refer to
Drive Belt Replacement
in Engine Mechanical-3.4L.
- Raise the vehicle.
- Install a utility stand in order to support the frame assembly.
- Remove the frame rear bolts.
- Use the utility stand in order to lower the frame rear to gain access.
- Connect the power steering hose to the steering
gear.
Tighten
Tighten the fitting to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).
- Install the power steering gear hose clip.
- Use the utility stand in order to raise the frame rear.
- Install the frame rear bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 165 N·m (122 lb ft).
- Remove the utility stand.
- Install the intermediate shaft to the steering gear. Refer to
Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement
in Steering Wheel
and Column.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Bleed the power steering system. Refer to
Power Steering System Bleeding
.
