Convertible Top Wear (Replace Convertible Top and Folding Top Side Rear Weatherstrips)

Some customers may comment that the convertible top is showing wear on the underside of the roof.

This condition may be due to the metal reinforcement in the folding top side rear weatherstrip protruding out and making contact with the top during the opening and closing cycles.

Replace the convertible top cover and the folding top side rear weatherstrip (left and right). Refer to Folding Top Cover Replacement in SI. These instructions supplement the top cover replacement process.

Note: Perform Step 2 before the old top cover is removed and Steps 3 and 4 with the old top cover completely removed.

1. Place a fender cover or seat cover over the seats to protect them from dirt and debris.



2. Before removing the folding top side front weatherstrip retainer. Mark the location with a paint pen for alignment.



3. With a paint pen, mark the rear of the 1-2 bow. This is the triangle area highlighted in white.

Important: The 1-2 bow of the convertible top is made out of magnesium and a die grinder should not be used to remove the material.

4. With a utility knife, scar the number 1-2 bow (shown as the highlighted area triangular zone in the graphic above). Make several passes in the material. Use vise-grip pliers to remove the piece.
5. Use a flat file and smooth any sharp edges from the bow.
6. After installing the top, cycle the convertible top assembly to verify that there is no contact between the wear clip and the 1-2 bow. If contact is made, proceed to Step 7. If not, proceed to Step 8.



7. If the wear clip comes in contact with the 1-2 bow, remove it and then measure and cut 5 mm (¼ in) off the end and reinstall.
8. Apply GM weatherstrip lubricant or dielectric silicone grease to the area shown in the illustrations above.
