When the electronic brake control module (EBCM) is replaced, software and calibrations are flash programmed into the EBCM. The EBCM receives the vehicle powertrain options information from the engine control module (ECM) in order for the EBCM to automatically calibrate to the vehicle.
• | The ignition is ON. |
• | Ignition voltage is greater than 8 volts. |
One or more of the following conditions are present:
• | The incorrect EBCM is installed on the vehicle. |
• | The incorrect software or calibrations have been flash programmed into the EBCM. |
One or more of the following actions may occur:
• | The EBCM disables the antilock brake system (ABS). |
• | The EBCM disables or degrades dynamic rear proportioning (DRP) function. |
• | The ABS indicator illuminates. |
• | The vehicle dynamics caution (VDC) indicator illuminates. |
• | The brake warning indicator illuminates. |
• | The driver information center (DIC) displays the BRAKE message. |
• | The condition for the DTC is no longer present. |
• | The EBCM automatically clears the history DTC when a current DTC is not detected in 100 consecutive drive cycles. |
If the DTC was set after EBCM replacement, verify that the replacement EBCM and software are correct for the vehicle.

Verify that DTC C0551 programming is not set.
⇒ | If the DTC is set, program the EBCM. If the DTC resets, replace the EBCM. |
Perform the Diagnostic Repair Verification after completing the diagnostic procedure.
