Component Name

Warning: Gasoline or gasoline vapors are highly flammable. A fire could occur if an ignition source is present. Never drain or store gasoline or diesel fuel in an open container, due to the possibility of fire or explosion. Have a dry chemical (Class B) fire extinguisher nearby.

Preliminary Procedures

  1. Remove the battery negative terminal connection. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection.
  2. Remove the muffler. Refer to Engine Control Module Replacement.
  3. If equipped, remove the fuel tank protector. Refer to Fuel Tank Protector Replacement.
  4. Release the electrical connectors (Qty 2).

Fuel Tank Strap Fastener (Qty: 2)

Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.

Tighten
20 N·m (15  lb ft)

Fuel Tank Strap (Qty: 2)

Procedure

Move the fuel tank straps down and out of the way.

Fuel Tank Filler Hose

Procedure

  1. Release the retainer.
  2. Pull the fuel tank filler hose away from the fuel tank.

Fuel Tank Filler Hose Breather Hose

Procedure

Release the fuel tank filler hose breather hose from the fuel tank.

Fuel Filter Feed and Return Pipe

Procedure

Release the fuel pump feed and return pipes and move to one side.

Fuel Filter Retaining Ring

Procedure

  1. Release the fuel pump retaining ring.
  2. Lift out the retaining ring to access the fuel pump.

Fuel Pump

Caution: Do not run the fuel pump unless the fuel pump is submerged in fuel in order to prevent damage to the fuel pump.

Fuel Tank

Caution: Use extreme care when lowering the fuel tank. The fuel sender is made of plastic. Lowering the fuel tank may damage the fuel sender.
