Diagnostic Instructions
DTC Descriptor
DTC P2265: Water in Fuel Sensor Circuit Malfunction
Circuit/System Description
The water in fuel sensor is located in the bottom of the fuel filter housing. The engine control module (ECM) monitors the water in fuel sensor signal circuit for a predetermined voltage.
Conditions for Running the DTC
• | The DTC runs continuously once the above condition is met. |
Conditions for Setting the DTC
The ECM detects an incorrect water in fuel sensor signal for more than 0.7 s.
Action Taken When the DTC Sets
DTC P2265 is a Type C DTC.
Conditions for Clearing the DTC
DTC P2265 is a Type C DTC.

Circuit/System Verification
- Engine running, observe the DTC information with a scan tool. DTC P2265 should not set.
- Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC to verify the DTC does not reset. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the Freeze Frame/Failure Records data.
Circuit/System Testing
- Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the B116 Water in Fuel Sensor.
- Test for less than 5 Ω of resistance between the ground circuit terminal 2 and ground.
⇒ | If greater than the specified range, repair the ground circuit for an open/high resistance. |
- Ignition ON, verify that a test lamp illuminates between the ignition voltage circuit terminal 1 and ground.
⇒ | If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the ignition voltage circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal and the fuse is open, test all the components connected to the ignition voltage circuit and replace
as necessary. |
- Verify the scan tool Water in Fuel Sensor parameter displays No Water.
⇒ | If the parameter displays Water, test the signal circuit for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module (ECM). |
Note: If the fuse in the jumper wire opens, the signal circuit is shorted to a voltage and the sensor may be damaged.
- Install an 1 A fused jumper wire between the signal circuit terminal and ground. Verify the scan tool Water in Fuel Sensor parameter displays Water.
⇒ | If the parameter displays No Water, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage, or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module (ECM). |
- If all circuits test normal, replace the B116 Water in Fuel Sensor.
