Removal Procedure

Caution: If you are replacing the wheel(s), the wheel stud(s), the wheel nut(s) or the wheel bolt(s), install only new GM original equipment parts. Installation of used parts or non-GM original equipment parts may cause the wheel to loosen, loss of tire air pressure, poor vehicle handling and loss of vehicle control resulting in personal injury.

Tools Required

J 35917 Ball Joint Remover

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel.
  3. • For vehicles with steel wheels, refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
    • For Chevrolet and Oldsmobile vehicles with aluminum wheels, refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
    • For Pontiac or Export vehicles with aluminum wheels, refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  4. Remove the brake caliper bracket with the brake caliper. Refer to Front Brake Caliper Bracket Replacement in Disc Brakes.
  5. Remove the brake rotor. Refer to Front Brake Rotor Replacement in Disc Brakes.

  6. Object Number: 595784  Size: SH
  7. Use the J 35917 in order to press the wheel stud from the bearing/hub.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install a new wheel stud from the back side of the bearing/hub.

  2. Object Number: 65317  Size: SH
  3. Install three flat washers (1) to the wheel stud (3).
  4. Install a hex nut (2) to the wheel stud (3).

  5. Object Number: 175950  Size: SH
  6. Tighten the hex nut until the stud head is fully seated in the bearing/hub flange.
  7. Remove the hex nut and the washers from the wheel stud.
  8. Install the brake rotor. Refer to Front Brake Rotor Replacement in Disc Brakes.
  9. Install the brake caliper bracket with the brake caliper. Refer to Front Brake Caliper Bracket Replacement in Disc Brakes.
  10. Install the tire and wheel.
  11. • For vehicles with steel wheels, refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
    • For Chevrolet and Oldsmobile vehicles with aluminum wheels, refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
    • For Pontiac or Export vehicles with aluminum wheels, refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  12. Lower the vehicle.
