Parking Brake Shoe Adjustment Export

Tools Required

J 41713 Drum-to-Brake Shoe Clearance Gage

  1. Ensure that the park brake control (pedal) is in the full release (up) position.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  3. Ensure that both of the park brake cable actuator levers are in the full release (up) position. If both of the park brake cable actuator levers are not in the full release (up) position, adjust the park brake cable. Refer to Park Brake Cable Service/Adjustment .
  4. Remove the tire and wheel.
  5. • For vehicles with steel wheels, refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation
    • For Chevrolet and Oldsmobile vehicles with aluminum wheels, refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation
    • For Pontiac and Export vehicles with aluminum wheels, refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation
  6. Remove the rear brake caliper bracket with the rear brake caliper. Refer to Rear Brake Caliper Bracket Replacement in Disc Brakes.
  7. Remove the rear brake rotor. Refer to Rear Brake Rotor Replacement in Disc Brakes.

  8. Object Number: 177200  Size: SH
  9. Set the J 41713 so that the J 41713 contacts the inside diameter of the rotor (1).

  10. Object Number: 177201  Size: SH
  11. Position the J 41713 over the park brake shoe (1) at the widest point.

  12. Object Number: 339838  Size: MH
  13. Rotate the adjuster nut (6) until the park brake shoe lining contacts the J 41713 .
  14. Install the brake rotor. Refer to Rear Brake Rotor Replacement in Disc Brakes.
  15. Install the rear brake caliper bracket with the rear brake caliper. Refer to Rear Brake Caliper Bracket Replacement in Disc Brakes.
  16. Adjust park brake cable. Refer to Park Brake Cable Service/Adjustment .
  17. Lower the vehicle.
  18. Repeat this procedure for the opposite park brake shoe.
