Front Wheel Drive Shaft Seal Replacement Left

Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the left front tire and wheel.
  3. • For vehicles with steel wheels, refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
    • For Chevrolet and Oldsmobile vehicles with aluminum wheels, refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
    • For Pontiac and Export vehicles with aluminum wheels, refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  4. Remove the left engine splash shield. Refer to Engine Splash Shield Replacement in Body Front End.
  5. Remove the left stabilizer shaft link from the left lower control arm. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Link Replacement in Front Suspension.
  6. Remove the left tie rod end from the left steering knuckle.
  7. Remove the left lower ball joint from the left steering knuckle. Refer to Lower Control Arm Replacement in Front Suspension.
  8. Disconnect the left drive axle from the transaxle. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement in Wheel Drive Shafts.
  9. Secure the left drive axle to the left steering knuckle and strut.

  10. Object Number: 164799  Size: SH
  11. Use a screwdriver or other suitable tool to pry out the seal. Do NOT damage the seal bore.

Installation Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 34115 Left Side Axle Seal Installer
    • J 37292-B Axle Seal Protector
  1. Use a light wipe of transaxle fluid to lubricate the seal lip.

  2. Object Number: 190634  Size: SH
  3. Use the J 34115 to install a new seal.
  4. Install the J 37292-B in the seal.
  5. Important: Carefully guide the axle shaft past the lip seal. Do NOT allow the shaft splines to contact any portion of the seal lip surface or damage to the seal will occur.

  6. Connect the left drive axle to the transaxle. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement in Wheel Drive Shafts.
  7. Remove the J 37292-B .
  8. Install the left lower ball joint to the left steering knuckle. Refer to Lower Control Arm Replacement in Front Suspension.
  9. Install the left tie rod end to the left steering knuckle.
  10. Install the left stabilizer shaft link to the left lower control arm. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Link Replacement in Front Suspension.
  11. Install the left engine splash shield. Refer to Engine Splash Shield Replacement in Body Front End.
  12. Install the left front tire and wheel.
  13. • For vehicles with steel wheels, refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
    • For Chevrolet and Oldsmobile vehicles with aluminum wheels, refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
    • For Pontiac and Export vehicles with aluminum wheels, refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  14. Lower the vehicle.
  15. Adjust the fluid level. Refer to the following information.

    •  Approximate Fluid Capacities in Maintenance and Lubrication
  17. Inspect for fluid leaks.

Front Wheel Drive Shaft Seal Replacement Right

Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the right front tire and wheel.
  3. • For vehicles with steel wheels, refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
    • For Chevrolet and Oldsmobile vehicles with aluminum wheels, refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
    • For Pontiac and Export vehicles with aluminum wheels, refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  4. Remove the right engine splash shield. Refer to Engine Splash Shield Replacement in Body Front End.
  5. Remove the right stabilizer shaft link from the right lower control arm. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Link Replacement in Front Suspension.
  6. Remove the right tie rod end from the right steering knuckle.
  7. Remove the right lower ball joint from the right steering knuckle. Refer to Lower Control Arm Replacement in Front Suspension.
  8. Disconnect the right drive axle from the transaxle. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement in Wheel Drive Shafts.
  9. Secure the right drive axle to the right steering knuckle and strut.

  10. Object Number: 190628  Size: SH
  11. Use a screwdriver or other suitable tool to pry out the seal. Do NOT damage the seal bore.

Installation Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 29130 Right Side Axle Seal Installer
    • J 37292-B Axle Seal Protector
  1. Use a light wipe of transaxle fluid to lubricate the seal lip.

  2. Object Number: 190628  Size: SH
  3. Use the J 29130 to install a new seal.
  4. Install the J 37292-B in the seal.
  5. Important: Carefully guide the axle shaft past the lip seal. Do NOT allow the shaft splines to contact any portion of the seal lip surface or damage to the seal will occur.

  6. Connect the right drive axle to the transaxle. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement in Wheel Drive Shafts.
  7. Remove the J 37292-B .
  8. Install the right lower ball joint to the right steering knuckle. Refer to Lower Control Arm Replacement in Front Suspension.
  9. Install the right tie rod end to the right steering knuckle.
  10. Install the right stabilizer shaft link to the right steering knuckle. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Link Replacement in Front Suspension.
  11. Install the right engine splash shield. Refer to Engine Splash Shield Replacement in Body Front End.
  12. Install the right front tire and wheel.
  13. • For vehicles with steel wheels, refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
    • For Chevrolet and Oldsmobile vehicles with aluminum wheels, refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
    • For Pontiac and Export vehicles with aluminum wheels, refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  14. Lower the vehicle.
  15. Adjust the fluid level. Refer to the following information.
