THE CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEM ON 1982 "A" AND "X" MODELS WITH 2.5L L-4 (ENGINE CODE R) ENGINES USES A MECHANICAL VACUUM PUMP TO SUPPLEMENT ENGINE VACUUM. THE VACUUM PUMP IS SIMILAR IN APPEARANCE TO A MECHANICAL FUEL PUMP AND ON THE 2.5L L-4 EFI ENGINE IS MOUNTED WHERE THE MECHANICAL FUEL PUMP WAS PREVIOUSLY LOCATED. DIAGNOSIS OF VACUUM PUMPS MAY BE FOUND IN SECTION 6H OF THE 1982 PHOENIX AND 6000 SERVICE MANUAL FIGURE 1 OF THIS BULLETIN PROVIDES THE VACUUM SCHEMATIC FOR THE SYSTEM.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
