The speedometer on the 1984 6000 STE may go to zero intermittently, especially when going over bumps or with engine "rocking" during an acceleration. This is caused by the wiring harness to the VSS (PM generator on transaxle) being misrouted around the brake pipes or the wiring to the VSS being damaged.
To correct this condition, remove the connector from the VSS (raise car to do this). Inspect the harness connector terminals for damage and repair if necessary. Also, inspect the VSS wiring insulation for damage, repairing where required. Then reroute the connector and harness to relieve any tension.
This condition has been corrected in production, after the first two month's build.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
