LINT BUILD-UP ON SEATS REPAIR INFORMATION

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1984 'A' And 'J' Cars

1984 'A' and 'J' models with Rocaille seat trim may develop lint buildup on the seats which is sometimes difficult to remove. The source of this lint is the fibres from the acoustic insulation which is glued to the right side I/P hush panel. The ECM harness rubs against this insulation and strips away fibres. Air from the heater duct then distributes the fibres throughout the vehicle.

This condition can be corrected after removal of the hush panel using one of the following procedures:

1. Remove the insulation material from the hush panel, being certain to remove ALL of the loose fibres. Obtain a 760 X 460 X 13 mm (30 X 18 X 1/2 inch) thick piece of polyurethane foam, and trim it to match the shape of the hush panel. Glue this material to the panel. Replace the panel.

OR

2. Place some duct tape over worn or rubbed areas of the insulation. Be sure to cover all areas where shredding of the material has occurred. Replace the hush panel.

Remove lint from the seats with a lint brush, obtainable at most department stores.

Additional lint buildup may occur within a few days after the correction due to some lint accumulation within the A/C ducts.

For warranty purposes, use the most applicable labour operations number and claim .4 hr and $1.50 for material.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
