A "click" or "clunk" felt in the steering wheel during vehicle stops and starts may be caused by intermediate shaft slip joint motion.
To correct this condition:
1. Remove intermediate shaft from car per chassis service manual instructions.
2. Remove all foreign matter from shaft by wiping with a shop cloth.
3. Using chassis grease meeting requirements of GM-6031M (Part No. 992822), grease the exposed shaft. FILL SHAFT POCKET AT POINT X and the inside of the tube at point Y. See Fig.
4. Fully compress intermediate shaft assembly two or three times to work grease into the assembly.
REPEAT steps 3 and 4 three times.
5. Reinstall intermediate shaft assembly in car.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
