J 41718 Sunroof Timing Pins

Removal Procedure

    Object Number: 594490 Size: SH

    Important:

       • The sunroof Positioning Encoding Switch (PES) (3) is aligned to the drive cables. The PES switch comes from the factory set to the glass panel CLOSED position. A position lock pin (1) has been installed on the top of the PES switch. This pin (1) must remain until after the installation of the actuator and of the PES switch. This lock pin locks the drive gears in place and must be removed before operation of the sunroof module.
       • If you reuse a PES switch, place the sunroof glass panel in the CLOSED position. Install the sunroof timing pins J 41718 . Install a position lock pin, or install 2 wires, such as the ends of a paper clip, then remove the PES switch from the sunroof module. The PES switch timing will be lost if you do not follow this procedure.

  1. Position the sunroof glass panel to the closed position.
  2. Remove the sunroof module from the vehicle. Refer to Power Sunroof Module Replacement .

  3. Object Number: 548328 Size: SH

Important: Before removing the PES switch from the sunroof module, the J 41718 sunroof timing pins must be installed to lock the cable/cam mechanism into position.

  4. The cable mechanisms and/or the cam mechanisms, on both sides of the glass, contain a set of timing holes. These holes are aligned to the sunroof glass panel in the CLOSED position. Remove the left and right side front sunroof glass panel screws.
  5. Align the timing holes. Use a flat-bladed tool to push the cable mechanism and/or the cam mechanism forward or rearward.

Install the J 41718 sunroof timing pins into the left and right sunroof glass panel screw holes.

If you remove the PES switch, install the position lock pin, or install 2 wires, such as the ends of a paper clip, to the PES switch.

  6. Remove the sunroof actuator. Refer to Sunroof Actuator Replacement .

  7. Object Number: 594490 Size: SH
  8. Disconnect the electrical connector from the PES switch (3).
  9. Remove the PES switch screw (2) from the switch.
  10. Hold down on both drive cables, and lift straight up to remove the PES switch from the sunroof module.

Installation Procedure

    Object Number: 594501 Size: SH

Important: The new PES switch comes with a position lock pin that is installed on top of the PES switch. This locks the timing gears in place. Do not remove this pin until after you have installed the PES switch and the actuator.

  1. Keeping the position lock pin in the new PES switch, position the PES switch over the drive cables and press down.
  2. If the PES switch does not slide into position, the ridges on the drive cable housings will not go into the grooves on the back of the PES switch. Lift each cable into the PES switch, and press down on the PES switch assembly.

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the Position Encoding Switch screw (2) to the switch.
  4. Tighten
Tighten the Position Encoding Switch screw to 2 N·m (18 lb in).

  5. Connect the electrical connector to the PES switch .
  6. Install the sunroof actuator. Refer to Sunroof Actuator Replacement .
  7. Remove the position lock pin (1) or the 2 wires from the PES switch.

  8. Object Number: 548328 Size: SH
  9. Remove the 2 pins from the cable mechanisms and/or from the cam mechanisms.
  10. Install the left and right front sunroof glass panel screws.
  11. Tighten
Tighten the front sunroof glass panel screws to 4 N·m (35 lb in).

  12. Install the sunroof module, but do not install the headliner until after you have tested the sunroof operation. Refer to Power Sunroof Module Replacement .
  13. Inspect the operation of the sunroof.
  14. Install the headliner. Refer to Headlining Trim Panel Replacement in Interior Trim.
