Subject:Air Bag Indicator Illuminated After Replacement of Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM), DTC B1001 (Reprogram Body Control Module (BCM) to Accept New SDM)

Models:2002 Buick Rendezvous
2001-02 Pontiac Aztek

Condition

Some technicians may encounter a condition where the Air Bag indicator is illuminated and a DTC B1001 is set after the replacement of the SDM. Normal service diagnostics leads to replacing the SDM again.

Cause

The SDM part number stored within the BCM and the replacement SDM have different part numbers.

Correction

Verify the part number on the original SDM (if possible) and the new SDM (verify the part number on the shipping carton). If the part numbers are different, the BCM will have to be reprogrammed using the Service Programming procedure.

Perform the following SPS reprogramming to allow the BCM to accept the new part number of the new SDM.

  1. Connect the Tech 2 to the vehicle DLC.
  2. Turn the key to the RUN position, engine off.
  3. Turn on the Tech 2.
  4. When the main screen is displayed on the Tech 2, verify that software version 21.007 or newer is loaded in the Tech 2.
  5. If the Tech 2 software is not 21.007 or newer, update the Tech 2. If the software is correct, continue by pressing Enter.
  6. Complete the normal Service Programming procedure using the Tech 2 and the Techline Terminal.
  7. After completing the Service Programming procedure, return to the main menu screen.
  8. From the main menu screen, Select F0, Diagnostics.
  9. Select the applicable model year.
  10. Select Truck.
  11. Press Enter.
  12. Select Body Style.
  13. Press Enter
  14. Select "A" (two wheel drive), or "B" (four wheel drive) as shown in the VIN.
  15. Press Enter.
  16. Select the applicable Vehicle Division.
  17. Press Enter.
  18. Select the applicable Model.
  19. Press Enter.
  20. Select Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR).
  21. Press Enter.
  22. Select Diagnostic Trouble Codes.
  23. Press Enter.
  24. Select Clear Diagnostic Trouble Codes.
  25. Press Enter.
  26. Press "YES" to clear the codes.
  27. After the codes are cleared, Exit back to the main menu screen and turn the key to the OFF position. Disconnect the Tech 2 from the vehicle.
  28. After turning the key to the OFF position, wait approximately 15 seconds.
  29. While observing the Air Bag Indicator on the Instrument Panel, turn the key to the RUN position. The Air Bag Indicator should flash seven (7) times and then go out, normal operation.

Warranty Information

Reprogramming of the BCM to accept the new SDM part number should be covered under warranty for the life of the vehicle. Reprogramming of the BCM is the responsibility of the manufacturer, not the customer. The customer should pay for the SDM and the installation of the SDM, but not for the reprogramming after the warranty period expires. See your local factory representative for authorization for the reprogramming only.
