Important: The Oil Life Monitoring System can be found
on many General Motor's vehicles prior to 2004. Refer to SI and/or the Owner's Manual
for detailed information.
The purpose of this bulletin is to help technicians identify which vehicles
are equipped with the oil life monitoring system. Although many General Motors vehicles
prior to 2004 have been equipped with the oil life monitoring system, the 2004 model
year vehicles were used as a starting point to validate the system/scan tool functionality.
Customers have come to depend on the Oil Life Monitoring System found on most
General Motor's vehicles to inform them when it's time for an oil change. If for any
reason the PCM is replaced, it is important to access the "Percent of Oil Life
Remaining" from the vehicle's current PCM PRIOR
to
removing the PCM. This value must be programmed into the new PCM (after it is installed
in the vehicle) by using the scan tool.
Notice: Failure to reprogram the value to the new PCM will
result in missed maintenance, which may cause damage to the engine.
Important: If the replacement module is not programmed
with the remaining engine oil life, the engine oil will need to changed at 5,000 km
(3,000 mi) from the last engine oil change.
