CLICKING NOISE COWL AREA REPOSITION FAST IDLE SOL.RELAY

NOTICE: Information contained in this bulletin supersedes bulletin 83-T-24. Bulletin 83-T-24 should be removed and discarded.

A "clicking" noise from the cowl area on 1983 Grand Prix, Bonneville and Parisienne models with 5.0L V-8 engines (VIN Code H) may be traced to the cowl mounted fast idle solenoid relay.

The "clicking" is usually heard on non-A/C cars or in the A/C "off" mode in response to throttle position change.

The relay controls the fast idle solenoid as follows:

NON-A/C CARS OR A/C "OFF"

Solenoid energized with closed throttle mode to provide additional induction air for proper catalytic converter operation during deceleration. Solenoid de-energized with open throttle mode.

A/C "ON"

Solenoid energized constantly for A/C "on," idle speed up.

CORRECTION

This noise can be eliminated by replacing the fast idle solenoid relay with an updated version (part number 14073412) which incorporates a sound deadening mount.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
