ASSIST STRAP NOT FULLY ENGAGED (INSTALLATION PROCEDURES)

Subject: ASSIST STRAPS NOT FULLY ENGAGED (INSTALLATION PROCEDURE)

Models Affected: 1992 BONNEVILLE MODELS

CONDITION:

----------- Owners of some 1992 Bonneville vehicles, prior to VIN number N1224903, may exhibit a condition where the assist straps appear to flex or feel loose. The strap may appear properly seated until some effort is exerted against it.

CORRECTION:

----------- Proper installation of the assist strap calls for the snap on the legs to be fully seated in the sheet metal prior to the push pin being installed. To assure the installation is correct, the following steps must be performed:

1. Remove the push pins from the assist strap. 2. Apply force against the assist strap until it is seated fully in the sheet metal. When the strap is fully seated, a snap sound will be heard as the locks on the strap legs engage. Pull lightly on the strap to assure proper retention has been achieved. 3. Reinstall the push pins. If the push pin will not engage, the snap legs of the assist handle are not properly installed. Begin at Step 1 and reinstall the handle as necessary. 4. Pull firmly on the strap to assure no flex or looseness is felt.
