REDUCED A/C PERFORMANCE (INST. FOAM PANELS/FOAM BLOCK)

SUBJECT: REDUCED A/C PERFORMANCE (INSTALL FOAM PANELS/FOAM BLOCK)

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1992-93 PONTIAC "H" SERIES

CONDITION:

--------- Reduced performance from A/C system. Owner will notice increased performance when the glove box door is open.

CAUSE:

----- Air flow is being restricted by the seals on the glove box door and/or trapped in the glove box door.

CORRECTION:

---------- Caution: When performing service on or around Supplemental Inflatable Restraints (SIR) components or SIR wiring, follow procedures in the service manual, Section 9J, to temporarily disable the SIR system. Refer to the appropriate service manual procedures. Failure to follow procedures could result in possible air bag deployment, personal injury, or unneeded SIR system repairs.

1 Remove glove box insert from instrument panel. Refer to Section 8C.

2. Cut out right and left side foam panels using supplied templates (Figure 1). Panels should be cut from 10- 12mm (0.39-0.47 in.) thick foam with adhesive on one side.

3. Remove small pieces 65 x 10 x 12mm (2.55 x 0.39 x 0.47 in.) of foam (2) from back of duct portion of glove compartment insert. DO NOT remove "C" shaped foam on back of duct (Figure 2).

4. Install foam panels, inside of compartment duct from back side of glove box. The panels are attached to the glove box side of the duct (Figure 3).

5. Remove both glove box door seals from back of glove box door (Figure 4).

6. Cut 3 strips of 10-12mm (0.39-0.47 in.) thick adhesive backed foam using supplied template (Figure 1). Stick two strips together (adhesive sides together), then stick the third strip on the other two so that no adhesive is showing.

7. Remove right side A/C outlet from glove box door.

8. Insert the foam block into the glove box door above the right side outlet. Make sure that the foam block is retained above the flange that surrounds A/C outlet and does not contact the A/C outlet (Figure 5).

9. Cut lip off both glove box door seals, then reinstall the seals backwards so the cut area is not visible to the passenger compartment (Figures 4 - 6).

10. Install right A/C outlet to glove box door.

11. Install glove box insert to instrument panel. Refer to Section 8C.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
