Detonation/Spark Knock
Checks
| Action
|
DEFINITION: A mild
to severe ping, usually worse under acceleration. The engine
makes sharp metallic knocks that change with throttle opening.
|
Preliminary Checks
|
• | Refer to Important Preliminary Checks Before Starting in
Symptoms
. |
• | Refer to Visual/Physical Checks in
Symptoms
. |
|
Fuel System
|
• | Check the fuel pressure. |
• | Check items that can cause an engine to run lean (long term fuel
trim significantly in the positive range). Refer to Diagnostic
Aids for
DTC P0171 Fuel Trim System Lean
. |
|
Ignition System
| Check the spark plugs for proper heat range. Refer to
Spark Plug Usage
in Engine Electrical.
|
Engine Cooling System
| Check for obvious overheating problems:
• | Check for low engine coolant. |
• | Check for a restricted air flow to the radiator or restricted
water flow through the radiator. |
• | Inspect for the correct coolant solution. A 50/50 mixture of ethylene
glycol (Dexcool®) should be used. Refer to
Coolant Concentration Testing
in Engine Cooling. |
|
Engine Mechanical
|
• | Inspect for excessive oil in the combustion chamber and leaking
valve seals. Refer to
Oil Consumption Diagnosis
in Engine Mechanical. |
• | Check the combustion chambers for excessive carbon buildup. Clean
the chambers using Top engine cleaner. Follow instructions on the
can. |
• | Check for incorrect basic engine parts. Inspect the following: |
|
Additional Checks
|
• | Check the TCC operation. A malfunctioning TCC can cause the engine
to spark knock. Refer to
Torque Converter Diagnosis
in Automatic Transaxle-4T65-E. |
• | If the scan tool readings are normal and there are no engine mechanical
problems, fill the fuel tank with a known quality gasoline that
has a minimum octane reading of
87 and re-evaluate the vehicle performance. |
