Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Assemble - Off Vehicle Column Shift
- Apply lithium grease to
the race and upper shaft assembly.
- Align the marks on the race and upper shaft assembly with the
marks you made from the disassemble procedure to the lower shaft assembly
- Install the lower shaft assembly to the race and upper shaft assembly.
- Install the cable support
bracket.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Lubricate the 3 flat
head screws with LOCTITE®.
Install the 3 flat head screws.
Tighten
Tighten the 3 flat head screws to 3.5 N·m (31 lb in).
- If the sensor assembly
is present, perform the following steps:
6.1. | Install the dual triangle sensor assembly (1). |
6.2. | Install the sensor locator (2). |
6.3. | Install the sensor retainer (3). |
6.4. | Install the steering shaft seal (4). |
6.5. | Install the boot (5). |
- If the sensor assembly
is not present, perform the following steps:
7.1. | Install the boot seal (1). |
7.2. | Install the sensor retainer (2). |
7.3. | Install the steering shaft seal (3). |
7.4. | Install the boot (4). |
- Install the steering shaft
assembly (2) into the steering column tilt head assembly (1).
- Install the tilt head
assembly (1) and the lower steering shaft (3) into the steering
column support assembly (2).
Important: Replace the steering column support assembly if the steering column
support assembly has been staked 3 times.
- Lubricate the pivot pins with synthetic grease.
Install the 2 pivot pins onto the steering column support assembly.
Stake the pins in 3 places.
- Install the linear shift assembly, shift lever and the automatic
transmission shift lock control only. Refer to
Linear Shift Assembly - Assemble - Off Vehicle

- Install the tilt spring assembly only. Refer to
Tilt Spring - Assemble - Off Vehicle

- Install the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly only.

- Install the signal switch housing. Refer to

- Apply lithium grease to
the race and upper shaft assembly.
- Align the marks on the race and upper shaft assembly with the
marks you made from the disassemble procedure to the lower shaft assembly
- Install the lower shaft assembly to the race and upper shaft assembly.
- Install the cable support
bracket.

- If the sensor assembly
is not present, perform the following steps:
7.1. | Install the boot seal (1). |
7.2. | Install the sensor retainer (2). |
7.3. | Install the steering shaft seal (3). |
7.4. | Install the boot (4). |
- Install the steering shaft
assembly (2) into the steering column tilt head assembly (1).
- Install the tilt head
assembly (1) and the lower steering shaft (3) into the steering
column support assembly (2).
Important: Replace the steering column support assembly if the steering column
support assembly has been staked 3 times.
- Lubricate the pivot pins with synthetic grease.
Install the 2 pivot pins onto the steering column support assembly.
Stake the pins in 3 places.
- Install the tilt spring assembly only. Refer to

- Install the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly only.

- Install the signal switch housing. Refer to
