SCHEMATIC REFERENCE: Backup Lamp Schematics

Did you perform the Lighting System Diagnostic System Check?

  1. Install a scan tool.
  2. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  3. With the scan tool, command the backup lamp relay ON and OFF.

Did the backup lamps turn ON and OFF with each command?

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the backup lamp relay.
  3. Turn ON the ignition with the engine OFF.
  4. Probe the coil side feed circuit of the backup lamp relay with a test lamp that is connected to a good ground.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Probe the switch side feed circuit of the backup lamp relay with a test lamp connected to a good ground.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Connect a test lamp from the coil side feed circuit to the control circuit of the backup lamp relay.
  3. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  4. With a scan tool, command the backup lamp relay ON and OFF.

Does the test lamp turn ON and OFF with each command?

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Connect a fused jumper between the backup lamp relay switch side feed circuit and the backup lamp supply voltage circuit at the backup lamp relay connector.
  3. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.

Did the backup lamps illuminate?

Inspect for poor connections at the backup lamp relay. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Did you find and correct the condition?

Test for an open circuit or high resistance in the backup lamp relay control circuit. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Did you find and correct the condition?
