Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Assemble - Off Vehicle Column Shift


    Object Number: 299888  Size: SH
  1. Apply lithium grease to the race and upper shaft assembly.
  2. Align the marks on the race and upper shaft assembly with the lower shaft assembly marks you made from the disassemble procedure.
  3. Install the lower shaft assembly to the race and upper shaft assembly.

  4. Object Number: 420256  Size: SH
  5. Install the cable support bracket.
  6. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  7. Lubricate the 3 flat head screws with LOCTITE®.
  8. Install the 3 flat head screws.

    Tighten
    Tighten the screws to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  9. If no sensor assembly is present, perform the following steps:
  10. 6.1. Install the boot seal (1)
    6.2. Install the sensor retainer (2)
    6.3. Install the steering shaft seal (3)
    6.4. Install the boot (4)

  11. If a sensor assembly is present, perform the following steps:
  12. 7.1. Install the sensor steer assembly (1)

    The sensor steer assembly must be aligned to the 9 o'clock position

    7.2. Install the sensor locator (2)
    7.3. Install the sensor retainer (3)
    7.4. Install the steering shaft seal (4)
    7.5. Install the boot (5)

  13. Install the steering shaft assembly (2) into the steering column tilt head assembly (1).

  14. Object Number: 420224  Size: SH
  15. Install the tilt head assembly (1) and the steering shaft (3) into the steering column jacket assembly (2).

  16. Object Number: 420225  Size: SH

    Important: Replace the steering column support assembly if the steering column support assembly has been staked 3 times.

  17. Lubricate the pivot pins with synthetic grease.
  18. Install the 2 pivot pins onto the steering column support assembly. Stake the pins in 3 places.

    Caution: Improper routing of the wire harness assembly may damage the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil. This may result in a malfunction of the coil, which may cause personal injury.

  19. Install the linear shift assembly and the automatic transmission shift lock control only. Refer to Linear Shift Assembly - Assemble - Off Vehicle .
  20. Install the tilt spring assembly only. Refer to Tilt Spring - Assemble - Off Vehicle .
  21. Install the turn signal switch housing. Refer to Turn Signal Switch Housing - Assemble - Off Vehicle .
  22. Enable the inflatable restraint steering wheel module. Refer to Enabling the SIR System in SIR.

Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Assemble - Off Vehicle Floor Shift

  1. Apply lithium grease to the race and upper shaft assembly.
  2. Align the marks on the race and upper shaft assembly with the lower shaft assembly marks you made from the disassemble procedure.
  3. Install the lower shaft assembly to the race and upper shaft assembly.

  4. Object Number: 420256  Size: SH
  5. Install the cable support bracket.
  6. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure.   9. If no sensor assembly is present, perform the following steps:

    6.2. Install the sensor retainer (2)
    6.3. Install the steering shaft seal (3)
    6.4. Install the boot (4)

  11. If a sensor assembly is present, perform the following steps:
  12. 7.1. Install the sensor steer assembly (1)

    The sensor steer assembly must be aligned to the 9 o'clock position

    7.2. Install the sensor locator (2)
    7.3. Install the sensor retainer (3)
    7.4. Install the steering shaft seal (4)
    7.5. Install the boot (5)

  13. Install the steering shaft assembly (2) into the steering column tilt head assembly (1).

  14. Object Number: 420224  Size: SH
  15. Install the tilt head assembly (1) and the steering shaft (3) into the steering column jacket assembly (2).

  16. Object Number: 420225  Size: SH

    Important: Replace the steering column support assembly if the steering column support assembly has been staked 3 times.

  17. Lubricate the pivot pins with synthetic grease.
  18. Install the 2 pivot pins onto the steering column support assembly. Stake the pins in 3 places.

  19. Install the tilt spring assembly only. Refer to Tilt Spring - Assemble - Off Vehicle .
  20. Caution: Improper routing of the wire harness assembly may damage the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil. This may result in a malfunction of the coil, which may cause personal injury.

  21. Install the turn signal switch housing. Refer to Turn Signal Switch Housing - Assemble - Off Vehicle .
  22. Enable the inflatable restraint steering wheel module. Refer to Enabling the SIR System in SIR.
