Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Assemble - Off Vehicle Column Shift
- Apply lithium grease to
the race and upper shaft assembly.
- Align the marks on the race and upper shaft assembly with the
lower shaft assembly marks you made from the disassemble procedure.
- Install the lower shaft assembly to the race and upper shaft assembly.
- Install the cable support
bracket.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Lubricate the 3 flat head screws with LOCTITE®.
Install the 3 flat head screws.
Tighten
Tighten the screws to 10 N·m (89 lb in).
- If no sensor assembly
is present, perform the following steps:
6.1. | Install the boot seal (1) |
6.2. | Install the sensor retainer (2) |
6.3. | Install the steering shaft seal (3) |
6.4. | Install the boot (4) |
- If a sensor assembly is
present, perform the following steps:
7.1. | Install the sensor steer assembly (1) |
The sensor
steer assembly must be aligned to the 9 o'clock position
7.2. | Install the sensor locator (2) |
7.3. | Install the sensor retainer (3) |
7.4. | Install the steering shaft seal (4) |
7.5. | Install the boot (5) |
- Install the steering shaft
assembly (2) into the steering column tilt head assembly (1).
- Install the tilt head
assembly (1) and the steering shaft (3) into the steering column
jacket assembly (2).
Important: Replace the steering column support assembly if the steering column
support assembly has been staked 3 times.
- Lubricate the pivot pins with synthetic grease.
Install
the 2 pivot pins onto the steering column support assembly. Stake the
pins in 3 places.
Caution: Improper routing of the wire harness assembly may damage the inflatable
restraint steering wheel module coil. This may result in a malfunction of
the coil, which may cause personal injury.
- Install the linear shift assembly and the automatic transmission
shift lock control only. Refer to
