Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle Column Shift

    Object Number: 420219  Size: SH

    Caution: This vehicle is equipped with a Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) System. Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause the following conditions:

       • Air bag deployment
       • Personal injury
       • Unnecessary SIR system repairs
    In order to avoid the above conditions, observe the following guidelines:
       • Refer to SIR Component Views in order to determine if you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring.
       • If you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System.

  1. Disable the inflatable restraint steering wheel module. Refer to Disabling the SIR System in SIR.
  2. Remove the turn signal switch housing. Refer to Turn Signal Switch Housing - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .
  3. Remove the tilt spring only. Refer to Tilt Spring - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .
  4. Remove the linear shift assembly and the automatic transmission shift lock control only. Refer to Linear Shift Assembly - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .
  5. Remove 2 pivot pins (1) from the steering column support assembly using J 21854-01 .

  6. Object Number: 420221  Size: SH
  7. If the sensor assembly is present, perform the following steps.
  8. 6.1. Remove the boot (5)
    6.2. Remove the steering shaft seal (4)
    6.3. Remove the sensor retainer (3)
    6.4. Remove the sensor locator (2)
    6.5. Remove the sensor steer assembly (1)

  9. If you do not have a sensor assembly, perform the following:
  10. 7.1. Remove the boot (4)
    7.2. Remove the steering shaft seal (3)
    7.3. Remove the sensor retainer (2)
    7.4. Remove the boot seal (1)

  11. Remove the 3 flat head screws.
  12. Remove the cable support bracket.

  13. Object Number: 420224  Size: SH
  14. Remove the tilt head assembly (1) from the steering column support assembly (2) with the steering shaft (3) still attached.

  15. Object Number: 516127  Size: SH
  16. Remove the tilt head assembly (1) from the steering shaft assembly (2).

  17. Object Number: 306318  Size: SH

    Important: Mark the race and upper shaft (1) and the lower steering shaft (2) to ensure proper assembly. Failure to assemble properly will cause the steering wheel to be tuned 180 degrees.

  18. Tilt the upper shaft assembly 90 degrees to the steering shaft assembly and disengage.

  2. Remove the turn signal switch housing. Refer to Turn Signal Switch Housing - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .
  3. Remove the tilt spring only. Refer to Tilt Spring - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .
  4. Remove 2 pivot pins (1) from the steering column support assembly using J 21854-01 .

  5. Object Number: 420221  Size: SH
  6. If the sensor assembly is present, perform the following steps.
  7. 5.1. Remove the boot (5)
    5.2. Remove the steering shaft seal (4)
    5.3. Remove the sensor retainer (3)
    5.4. Remove the sensor locator (2)
    5.5. Remove the sensor steer assembly (1)

  8. If you do not have a sensor assembly, perform the following:
  9. 6.1. Remove the boot (4)
    6.2. Remove the steering shaft seal (3)
    6.3. Remove the sensor retainer (2)
    6.4. Remove the boot seal (1)

  10. Remove the 3 flat head screws.
  11. Remove the cable support bracket.

  12. Object Number: 420224  Size: SH
  13. Remove the tilt head assembly (1) from the steering column support assembly (2) with the steering shaft (3) still attached.

  14. Object Number: 516127  Size: SH
  15. Remove the tilt head assembly (1) from the steering shaft assembly (2).

  16. Object Number: 306318  Size: SH

    Important: Mark the race and upper shaft (1) and the lower steering shaft (2) to ensure proper assembly. Failure to assemble properly will cause the steering wheel to be turned 180 degrees.

  17. Tilt the upper shaft assembly 90 degrees to the steering shaft assembly and disengage.
