The eighth digit of the vehicle identification number (VIN) is the engine code letter, which identifies the engine as a 3.8L V6 (VIN eighth digit: K) (RPO code L36) (VIN eighth digit: 1) (RPO code L67).
Adhesive backed labels attached to the engine, laser etching, or stamping in the engine block indicate the engine unit number/build date code. All engines are stamped with a VIN derivative. For more information on the VIN derivative, refer to VIN Derivative .
The primary location (1) of the VIN derivative for the 3800 engines is above the starter motor on the engine block.
The secondary location (1) of the VIN derivative for the 3800 engines is below the water pump on the engine block.
The primary location (1) of the Engine ID for the 3800 L36 and L67 engines is in the center of the LH rocker arm or LH side of the engine in the oil pan rail area of the engine.
