Radiator Replacement L36

Tools Required

    • J 38185 Hose Clamp Pliers
    • J 41623-B Cooler Quick Connect Tool

Removal Procedure

  1. Drain the engine coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .

  2. Object Number: 420666  Size: SH
  3. Remove the upper radiator seal.
  4. Remove the upper tie bar. Refer to Front End Upper Tie Bar Replacement in Body Front End.

  5. Object Number: 420670  Size: SH
  6. Using the J 38185 , disconnect the coolant overflow hose from the radiator.
  7. Plug the coolant overflow hose.

  8. Object Number: 430129  Size: SH
  9. Disconnect the upper and lower radiator hoses from the radiator using the J 38185 , and position the hoses aside.

  10. Object Number: 420678  Size: SH
  11. Remove the transaxle oil cooler pipe bracket bolt from the lower tie bar.
  12. Remove the cooling fans. Refer to Engine Cooling Fan Replacement .

  13. Object Number: 740541  Size: SH
  14. Slide the plastic cap off the transaxle oil cooler pipe quick connect fittings.
  15. Disconnect the upper (1) and lower (2) transaxle oil cooler pipes from the radiator using the J 41623-B .

  16. Object Number: 287612  Size: SH
  17. Remove the A/C condenser mounting bolts.
  18. Separate the condenser from the radiator.
  19. Lift the radiator up and out of the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

    Notice: The bolt retaining the condenser to the radiator end tank is a special length and should be the ONLY bolt used upon reinstallation. The use of a longer bolt will damage the radiator end tank.

  1. Install the radiator to the vehicle. Place the bottom of the radiator in the lower pads.
  2. Install the condenser to the radiator.

  3. Object Number: 287612  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4. Install the A/C condenser mounting bolts.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 13 N·m (115 lb in).

  6. Push the upper and lower transaxle oil cooler pipes into the radiator quick connect fittings, until a "click" is heard.
  7. Tug gently on the cooler pipes to ensure proper retention.
  8. Slide the plastic caps (1) over the quick connect joints.
  9. Install the cooling fans. Refer to Engine Cooling Fan Replacement .

  10. Object Number: 420678  Size: SH
  11. Install the transaxle oil cooler pipe bracket bolt to the lower tie bar.
  12. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  13. Install the upper and lower radiator hoses to the radiator using the J 38185 .
  14. Connect the coolant recovery hose to the radiator neck using the J 38185 .
  15. Install the upper tie bar. Refer to Front End Upper Tie Bar Replacement in Body Front End.

  17. Install the upper radiator seal.
  18. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
  19. Inspect the transmission oil level. Refer to Transmission Fluid Check in Automatic/Transaxle - 4T65-E.

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the cooling fans. Refer to Engine Cooling Fan Replacement .

  2. Object Number: 420666  Size: SH
  3. Remove the upper radiator seal.

  4. Object Number: 130758  Size: SH
  5. Position the J 38185 to the clamp in order to remove the inlet radiator hose from the radiator.

  6. Object Number: 518549  Size: SH
  7. Disconnect the lower engine oil cooler line from the radiator.
  8. Disconnect the upper engine oil cooler line from the radiator.
  9. Remove the headlamps. Refer to Headlamp Replacement in Lighting Systems.

  10. Object Number: 287612  Size: SH
  11. Remove the condenser mounting bolts.

  12. Object Number: 287613  Size: SH

    Important: Care should be taken when removing the condenser not to damage the lower attachment points of both the radiator and condenser.

  13. Lift the condenser upward slightly in order to release the lower feet from the lower mounting features located at the front of the radiator.
  14. Lift the radiator up and out the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

  1. Position the radiator alignment dowels to align with the insulators.

    Important: Care should be taken when installing the condenser not to damage the lower attachment points of both the radiator and condenser.

  3. Position the condenser, aligning the lower feet to the lower mounting features located at the front of the radiator.
  4. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  5. Install the condenser mounting bolts.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 13 N·m (115 lb in).

  7. Install the headlamps. Refer to Headlamp Replacement in Lighting Systems.

  8. Object Number: 518549  Size: SH
  9. Connect the lower engine oil cooler line to the radiator.
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the line to 18 N·m (13 lb ft).

  11. Connect the upper engine oil cooler line to the radiator.
  12. Tighten
    Tighten the line to 18 N·m (13 lb ft).

  13. Position the J 38185 to the clamp in order to connect the inlet radiator hose to the radiator.

  14. Object Number: 420666  Size: SH
  15. Install the upper radiator seal.
  16. Install the cooling fans. Refer to Engine Cooling Fan Replacement .
