Removal Procedure

Caution: In order to avoid being burned, do not service the exhaust system while it is still hot. Service the system when it is cool.

Caution: Always wear protective goggles and gloves when removing exhaust parts as falling rust and sharp edges from worn exhaust components could result in serious personal injury.

  1. Disconnect the spark plug wires from the spark plugs.
  2. Remove the oil level indicator and tube. Refer to Oil Level Indicator and Tube Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 3.8 L.

  3. Object Number: 154527 Size: SH
  4. Remove the left engine lift bracket retaining fasteners.
  5. Remove the left engine lift bracket.
  6. Remove the two bolts attaching the exhaust crossover to the left exhaust manifold.

  7. Object Number: 683911 Size: SH
  8. Remove the left exhaust manifold retaining fasteners.
  9. Remove the left exhaust manifold and the gasket from the engine. Do not reuse the gasket.
  10. Clean and inspect the left exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Cleaning and Inspection in Engine Mechanical - 3.8 L Unit Repair.

Installation Procedure

    Object Number: 683911 Size: SH
  1. Place a NEW exhaust manifold gasket over the cylinder head studs.
  2. Position the left exhaust manifold to the exhaust crossover and up to the left cylinder head.
  3. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4. Install the left exhaust manifold fasteners.
  5. Tighten
Tighten the exhaust manifold fasteners to 30 N·m (22 lb ft).

  6. Install the two bolts attaching the exhaust crossover to the left exhaust manifold.
  7. Tighten
Tighten the exhaust manifold crossover bolts to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

    Object Number: 154527 Size: SH
  8. Position the left engine lift bracket to the engine.
  9. Install the left engine lift bracket retaining fasteners.
  10. Tighten
